setting up Kronos with 2nd keyboard

Post by jeroentuitd »

Hi There,

Here's the case:

I have a roland FA-08 connected to my K61. The global midi channel is set to channel 1 (I can't seem to change the midi transmit channel on the FA-08).

When creating a combi, let's say I want to play the kronos piano on the FA-08 and a lead sound on the K61. I can get the piano on the FA-08 but it's also sounding when i play the K61 keys together with the lead sound. The lead sound (set to channel 2, is only playing on the K61 like it should.

So, how can I get my K61 to only produce the lead sound when I play on the K61, and therefor only the piano when I play the FA-08?

Thanks in advance.

If you can't change the FA08 MIDI Channel, then change the Global Midi Channel on the Kronos to anything other than 1. The FA08 will control any parts assigned to 1, and the Kronos keybed will play anything assigned to the Global Channel.

I made a little typing error...

The midi channel on the kronos IS set to 2. So the piano (ch 1) can be played on the FA08. When i play the kronos I hear the lead synth (ch 2) AND the piano (ch 1)

When I change the kronos global midi channel to 1 it won't play the lead sound anymore, only the piano on both keyboards. It seems that the FA transmits to all midi channels...

Are you sure there isn't another part assigned to channel 2? Piano would normally be the default voice.

Have a look at P7: KARMA > GE Setup/Key Zones screen, and in the MIDI I/O section, ensure that the first Timbre Thru checkbox is not checked. If it isn't checked, then something else is happening -- but this sounds like a KARMA Timbre Thru thing (which works when KARMA is turned off).

HardSync for the win! I'm pretty sure this is a Karma thing where the global channel is automatically "copied" to channel 1.
EDIT: also, what a retardedly classic Roland limitation; midi transmission only on channel 1! I just checked this in the manual. You can only change the receive channel for simple programs (when would you ever need that? Just use performance mode).

Nevertheless, I'm sure you'll be able to figure it out on the Kronos. The drawback of changing the midi channel to "not 1" is that you'll have to rework some of the Karma stuff.

Im using the same rig. Although I thought you could change the FA-08 transmit channel but one in MIDI control mode? I might be wrong about that. If you find that you can only transmit on channel 1 in the 'set' / performance modes, please make sure you contact roland and register a support case. I will do so aswel - If a few people request this functionality they will implement it into the next firmware/system update. Their hasn't been any updates for this keyboard yet... (Also, please request a editor/plugin for computer/ipad like all the other current roland synths get - I've been on to them about this for a while ;) )
Kind regards,

AJK

Hardsync was right! tnx!

And indeed another Roland dissapontment. I decided to sell the FA-08 and use my good old M50 as a controller.

Tnx everyone!

I'm now doing a similar thing where I'm using my King Korg and my Kronos 73. I'm tired of beating my hands up on the weighted keyboard for organ patches. Right now I'm having to remember to turn the master volume down on the KK if I only want Kronos organ sounds but eventually I'll just have a simple patch on the KK that has no sound output. I have it set to midi channel 2. All of it's own internal sounds still work and I have my Kronos combi set up so that when I'm playing the King Korg I can use it's damper pedal to control the Leslie speeds. Since I have an "L" shaped rig with 2 pedal boards, this works best for me. The Kronos is on a rotating stand and the King Korg is on a standard "X" stand.

I'm playing an outdoor party gig this saturday and I'm hoping we can get some live video so I can show it to you all.

I'm very surprised thart you can't change the global midi channel on the Roland. I have very old Roland Keyboards that you could easily do this on.
If music is the food of love, play on and play loud!
Gear: Kronos 73, Wavestation EX, Polysix, King Korg, Monotron and Monotron Duo, Minikorg, Moog Grandmother, my very old MiniKorg, 4 acoustic and 9 electric guitars, 1 Ibanez 5 string bass, a Steel guitar, a bunch of microphones, 2 pairs of studio monitors and other very cool toys, 1 wife and 4 cats and a lava lamp!
