Dealing with varying patch/program/combi volume...

Hi all,

I did a search and i don't think this has been brought up before. - How do you Kronos (or any workstation keyboard) users deal with varying patch/program/combi volumes/dynamics when on stage?

E.g. Say if i am using an EP program, the sound may be quiet and i turn the volume to full.. But they if you switch to a brass program, the sound will be very loud.

Ive tried using the volume function on the setlist mode to change program 'volumes' but I've found different venues sound different..ect... and hard work balancing split volumes of say and EP and Lead Synth ends up in an unbalanced mess...

How do yous normally control and plan your volume? Via the master fader/volume knob/pedal...ect...?

I save customized patches/combis for just about every song and try to get the volumes right. I make master volume adjustments on the fly and if necessary, jump into combi mode to make adjustments. If it seems like I'm consistently making the same adjustments, I'll modify the program or combi. It really shouldn't be different from venue to venue.

I more meant say if splitting an EP and Lead synth, through 'studio' monitors, the balance might be right, but then in a bass heavy venue, the EP may be over powering in the lower frequencies or might not cut through within the band mix...ect...

Do you ever use the master effect/eq feature?

Does anyone know if its possible to overload the kronos output? Say if you have 16 parts in combi all at full volume - will this sum to digital distortion?

I try to monitor through a PA before taking it out, but still adjustments need to be made sometimes. Get it as close as you can, make adjustments on the fly best you can, then follow it up by making permanent modifications. Live recordings can be a nice tool - just a board mix, doesn't have to be perfect, but it'll give you an idea of your relative volumes and identify parts that get lost or jump out.

I've not experienced overloading the output. I have noticed that VA stuff can be extremely hot compared to samples, and some samples I can't get loud enough. I've resorted to using a compressor, EQ, or preamp IFX just to boost certain samples.

I also use a combi per song we play (sometimes two combis), so I set all volums inside each timbre separately.

Normally I keep the combi volume at 127. The individual timbre volumes I set default to 100 (to have some headroom inside a combi).

Then in the setlist, I set the volume default to 100, also to have some headroom.

I never use the equalizer in a set list, but I think you should use that to compensate for bass/treble heavy venues.
