Weirdness in MIDI land...

Throwing a hail mary post out there to see is anyone has some tips on getting MIDI working "right" with the microKorg.

I am ultimately using the Monotribe as a step sequencer for an old "Moog" MG-1, which is achieved via the MIDItribe conversion and a Doepfer Dark Link (MIDI to CV converter). This actually works (almost perfectly).

What stinks about the Monotribe is the ribbon, which means I can use a microKorg as a controller via the MIDItribe in. So far, so good...

The microKorg is (normally) using the MIDI clock from a device (Roland MC-303) that is also keeping time for several other devices. What the problem is is that I want the external MIDI clock AND the MIDI notes to go from the microKorg to the Monotribe. If I go into MIDI clock settings I can get the internal microKorg clock and notes to work, but setting it to external loses the clock entirely and only leaves the MIDI note info.

I may be missing something simple...

External clock going to MK MIDI In does not echo out the MIDI Out it does pass through the MIDI Thru however. But since you want both the external clock from the Roland device and note data from the MK to make it to your MT MIDI In, your going to need a MIDI router like a MOTU or iConnectivity device. Otherwise your kind of stuck in making MK the master clock to everything.

Remember that Thru is just a data repeater relay for In and Out is only data from the local device.

If I had a time machine I'd fly back to 1980 to yell at Dave and tell him to add MIDI Clock Sync Echo-To-Out or some such...... then buy some Apple and Microsoft stock while drinking a Tab before heading right back.

Ha - I think changing the course of history for an esoteric MIDI issue would be the best use of that time machine.

That's bad news, but thanks for the good info. Looks like the cheapest route might be the Merger by MIDISolutions (~$70). It will handle note and clock data.

There's gotta be a MIDI controller that can pass along external clock data with MIDI note data... More gear.. always more gear...

i didnt want to make a new topic for my question, hope it's not a problem if i ask it here, so:

Since my microkorg's tempo pot is broken i can't set microkorg audio through option to ON manually. Its a bit disappointing because i can't use the MK with microphone or as an external audio processor. Is there maybe some alternative solution perhaps ? Some midi sysex message or something ? I didn't find any useful in the manual.

Hi Cutoff,
Is it the original MK your using?
You don't need the audio thru On to process external signals,you can set Osc 1.
Set the wave form to its last position (after noise) to Audio In , then select input 1 or 2 with control 1.
The filter & effects now apply to your input ,but you will need to trigger notes to open the Amp envelope to hear your signal and this will be mixed with Osc 2.

Thanks for your help but unfortunately both inputs are still silent after i set up everything as you told. I also checked the cables and everything on the external device. Everything seems fine but still no audio thru

There's an input LED that lights red when input is clipping and green when signal is good.
Do you get this when feeding your MK?
There are input levels around the back and a line/mic switch.
Also check control 1 (&2) in Osc 1 section ,then check your filter is open(fully up to 127 if its LPF).Also check mixer for Osc 1 level.
If there is no input LED lighting ,then it's maybe a cable or input problem.If LED lights then check your synths settings again (Osc1 is set to audio in) and make sure you press keys when vocalising/inputting a signal.
