Kronos Setting for Cubase (Help!)

Post by H.S.Lee »

Hello,

I have KX-88 and I'm very beginner of midi,
And now I'm trying to buid a song with Cubase 5.
I know it's very basic and stupid question, but can Somebody help me please??

First, my systems are :

1. Software / Driver
- Win7, Korg USB-Midi Driver r14, Kronos Editor 2.1, Cubase 5,

2. Connection
- KX -- USB connect --> PC
- " -- L/R Out --> Audio Interface In (It Installed in PC's PCI Slot)
- Audio Interface L/R Out --> Monitor Speakers
I can hear my Kronos sound when I play it simply.

3. Kronos Global settiing
- Midi setup Basic
Midi channel : 01
Local Control On checked
Convert Position : Pre Midi
Note Receive : All
- Midi clock
External USB (But Other things are all same. no affected)
Receive Ext.realtime Commands checked.
- Midi filter : All checked
- Midi Routing Setup, Checked as below.
Vector Joystick
Chord Notes
Enable KARMA Module to MIDI Out
Enable MIDI In to KARMA Module

4. Cubase Setting
- Midi port : Kronos In/Out Activated.
- Midi device setup : I installed Kronos Patch List, looks OK.
When I click one of timber, also my Kronos's screen changes samely.
- VST Connections : I set "External Instruments" with my Kronos up.

I'd like make song at Cubase with using Kronos's high quality timbers as

Midi track 1 : Kronos German Grand (I-A000)
Midi track 2 : String Quartet (I-C033)
Midi track 3 : Mute Trumpet (I-C096)
....

But problem was, I could work only in midi-track 1 at Cubase,
If I try to work track 2,3 with Kronos timbers, I can see midi notes are written well, but only I can hear track one's timber.. OMG;;

I really want to build a song via my Kronos in Cubase,,
How can I solve it? (I guess my Kronos Global settings has something wrong..)

Thanks in advance.

You need to use combi or sequence mode, program mode is for playing single programs. If you have 32-bit Cubase you could use the Kronos Editor VST plugin to help you set things up.

I am curious about this as well. I plan to get Cubase 7.5 and I would like to bypass the onboard sequencer entirely (except for routing MIDI channels to Cubase).

I already have Cubase 7.5 and will later today be experimenting with the Cubase sequencer and my Kronos. I expect to have a lot of problems while I'm learning how to make it work.

I also want to try using Cubasis on my iPad but I first have to get it away from my wife! That's not easy! Sooo, I'll stick to my computer for today!

Will the Kronos editor not work with 64 bit Cubase?

it's really easy

- make sure that the kronos has local control set to OFF. Because you are going to use your daw for the midi routing. (the downside is that KARMA doesn't work anymore, but when you need karma just set local control to on for that moment and record the karma notes in cubase.)
- Now in cubase create a midi channel
- in the in / out choose Kronos Sound
- The midi channel setting determines which timbre you are going to hear

On the kronos
- choose an empty combi (or sequence)
- for channel 1 select a piano
- for channel 2 select a bass sound
- now go to the timbre page
- for channel 1 select timbre channel 1
- for channel 2 select timbre channel 2
- DO NOT select the GCH when working with DAW's

that's all you have to do to make it work, (just like any other hardware synth)

If you want to use external instruments in cubase, then create a kronos external instrument. Now when you did that do not create een instrument channel, but instead load that external instrument in a VST instruments slot. You have to do this, because the kronos is multitimbral and you can use the same instrument for 16 timbre channels (midi channels).

Now create a midi channel, select the external instrument you loaded in the in out section of that channel (it's available now since you have loaded it in the vst instruments slot). And select the corresponding midi channel you want to use.

The editor will only work with 32 bit DAWs unless you upgrade it to the pro version at Sound Quest ($299). https://www.squest.com/Forms/Upgrade.html

Is it possible to record the MIDI notes from KARMA to Cubase, or are we limited to audio only?

Yes, that's the way to do it, just record the midi notes from karma in cubase.
You can also use the karma engines on other hardware synths or vst's by simply routing the kronos out to the inputs of the vst or other hardware synth.

I am so new at this and I have already wasted way too much time diddling around. At this point, I would literally *pay* for a comprehensive video tutorial on getting started with the Kronos and Cubase 7.5...

I just want to spend my time actually making music...

there are already a lot of cubase tutorials on YouTube. I'm not really sure what a generic kronos cubase tutorial would add to that, since the kronos is just like any other multitibral hardware synthesizer / workstation you want to use in cubase.

what kind of topics do you want in a cubase tutorial if i would create one?

i've created one cubase tutorial in the past for the kronos where i showed how to embed Spectrasonics omnisphere (VST) with the kronos, and how to setup the internal cubase audio routing system so that every sound you hear will be recorded in realtime on it's own audio track. In that tutorial i've shown some of the basic settings but the rest is for advanced cubase users only i think. But maybe it's of some help for you. (halfway the video the cubase settings are explained.

Cubase:

Ableton (for the people that want to record clips from the kronos):
<iframe width="640" height="360" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/-CG9BQOXiQs" frameborder="0"></iframe>
in the ableton video i showed it with a push controller, but obviously any key or controller would work (you could also do the same by mapping for instance C1 till C2 for activating the recording clips)

I'm right now watching a Steinburg Cubase instructional video and it just said that I should have the proper driver downloaded into my system. This would be a Kronos driver.

Do I really need this and can I get it from the Korg website? I saw it on another driver website but I don't want to load it onto my music computer if I don't need to.

My music computer has no virus protection so that it runs smoother.

The Kronos MIDI drivers are available on the Korg site if those are the ones you need.

I definitely think you need it. Here is the link to the Korg support page with the driver:

I would recommend using Microsoft Security Essentials as virus protection. It's pretty decent and very non-intrusive. My music computer is always online and I've never had issues, although of course it's a good idea to use a "safer" browser like Firefox or Opera, and not install sketchy software or frequent sketchy websites.

You do need the midi driver. Sadly, there is no Korg supplied ASIO driver. WDM driver mode is recommended or otherwise ASIO4All but that is known to create problems with other drivers. Either option is only necessary for USB audio operation, if you already have a dedicated soundcard you should probably use that, and the Korg midi driver is fine for integration of controls.
