Filter modulation from an OSC like MiniMoog on AL1?

Post by timg11 »

The MiniMoog can modulate the filter with OSC3. OSC can be set to keyboard track.

In the AL1 documentation, 5–3: Filter Modulation shows sources from Keyboard Track, EG, and AMS (which includes LFOs and other controls, but no OSC sources).

Has anybody found a way to get Filter FM with filter modulation from an OSC with keyboard tracking and a pitch comparable to the main OSC?

I don't think its possible on AL-1.. MS20EX on the other hand can do this by patching output from VCO 1 or 2 into cutoff (not possible on the real MS-20)

It would be a lovely feature on AL-1 though... :)

But when Oscillator 3 on the Minimoog is set as a control source, it is no longer an audio oscillator nor is it tracking the keyboard - it's just a static frequency LFO. So you can achieve the same as the Minimoog by choosing an LFO as an AMS to modulate the filter.

Even if the Minimoog LFO (OSC 3 set as a control source) could track the keyboard, you could emulate that on AL-1 by setting" Note number" as an AMS on the frequency of the LFO chosen to modulate the filter - so that the higher up the keyboard you go, the faster the LFO frequency

Could you post an mp3 example of the sound you're after? I'm guessing you're looking for the sound like the beginning of Rush's "2112" or
at the end of Steve Miller's"Fly Like An Eagle". But I'm just guessing.

Post an mp3 example and I can explain how to achieve it using the AL-1
engine.

If you want filter LFO frequency to track the keyboard, it can be done in AL-1.

Assign filter cutoff modulation to LFO1, then on the LFO1 tab, assign frequency control to keyboard track or note number.

I think what timg11 wants is tracking high freq FM mod of the filter, which I've never been able to do with the AL-1. I use it on both the Minimoog and 2600 for vocal formant FX.

The AL-1 LFO's just don't go high enough to achieve the same effect.

section4 is right... use the MS20 - you can do it on that.

It depend's what you are after.

The Parameter Guide says at P8: Step Sequ/LFO, page 218 that the maximum LFO frequency is about 32 Hz. This can be used to FM a filter. But this is below audio-frequency range, well, depends on your speaker system.

The Moog (Voyager) allows to set up two different modes for OSC 3:HI and LOW. LOW corresponds to subaudio-frequencies (like the Kronos LFOs) and HI to the typical frequency range of an audio producing oscillator. This can, AFAIK, not be achieved with the Kronos AL-1 LFO at all.

Thanks for the tip. I was working on a lead sound like in ELP's "In the Beginning". The sound has two OSCs, 3 octaves apart (16 and 2).
There is a quality in the sound that is missing in my first attempt, and I thought using the 16' OSC as a Filter FM source might do the trick. I'll try it again with the MS-20 when I can get back to it.
