Kronos controlling TC-Helicon Voice Live Rack

Post by DoubleM »

Hi everybody,

I´m “downsizing” my live rig and need a little assistance.
Until now my masterkeyboard was a MOXF8 (midi channel 1) in mastermode, controlling the Kronos61 (midi channel 2) and a TC-Helicon Voice Live Rack (midi channel 15). In each master I had a zone set to midi channel 15 to send midi information (esp. the chords) to my TC for my background vocals. Now I decided to switch to one single keyboard, a Kronos 88.

My question is:
How can I achieve the same result?
Step 1:
Ok, I surely know I have to use Combi mode. Do I simply set one timbre to “ext”, midi channel 15, sending a program change for the respective preset on the VLR, and that´s it?
Step 2:
Implementing Setlist mode…
Is this the right approach? Or did I miss something?
Thanks for your assistance!!!
Cheers, Michael

I've never done the same thing but that sounds about the way I would do it.

Hi,

I'm doing something similar with a VoiceLive Touch in Kronos Song mode (chords for VoiceLive are coming from a MIDI track in the sequencer). I haven't got it fully working yet, but yes, you would need to use a COMBI, and set up the appropriate COMBI part if playing the chords live from the keyboard.

I had to use the EXT2 switch to send Bank change messages as well as program change. EXT only sends program change.

What I am struggling on is that whilst I am able to change patches on the VoiceLive, if I change to another song, the VoiceLive seems to be reacting to something being sent out, which starts editing the patch! I haven't had chance to look into that yet.

Thanks for your contributions, sander and Derek.

Pretty important info seems to be using "EXT2" instead of "EXT".

BTW: I used to work with a Voice Live Touch before I got the Voice Live Rack recently. The VLR is sounding so much better than the touch, Derek, you should give it a try. I never had similar problems with my Touch when the Yamaha was my master keyboard. So it seems to be a specific Kronos midi setting. Or maybe an embedded cc-message at the start of your midi tracks on your VLT midi channel...

I´ll give it a try this weekend and will report my results thereafter. :P
Cheers, Michael

It sounds as if you may be sending some sysex from the song.

I control a VoiceLive Touch via midi from my Kronos exactly the way the OP suggests (using EXT2 though). I've never had issues with program changes.

It should be the same either in Combi or Song mode.
