Static noise when recording

Post by geovicsha »

Hey guys,

I have finally got off my ass and decided to record some stuff with my Korg SV-1 and my Ashton MXl12FX (http://www.ashtonmusic.com/products/pa- ... em/mxl12fx), connected through one mono cable.

The USB cable was about 6metres, and when the USB cable was connected to my laptop, I'd hear static coming through the headphones out of my Korg. Disconnecting the USB cable, and the static is fine. I've tried the following:

1. Adjust the volumes and mix on both the Korg and my mixer.
2. I've used my roommates laptop and tried using just the battery in case it was a ground loop. I noticed that when using my headphones with the Korg, the static was gone. Only when playing it back via Audacity did it reoccur.
3. I've since bought a new cable that's only 1.8m. The statics with the headphones has almost gone, but the static when playing back remains, albeit lessened.

This used to be my father's mixer and he had no issues. I am a tad worried that it's the Korg itself.

Maybe I should try XLR cables?

I've also noticed that it sounds a tad 'mono-y' - would this be rectified by using two cables and connecting the left and right to the stereo inputs?

Please see the link to show you the static: http://www.megafileupload.com/en/file/5 ... c-mp3.html

Cheers!
