Sampling Trouble

When i plug in my mic i get a constant humming. When i record a sample i can hear it through the hum (but heavily distorted). I tried both inputs and different mics with the same result. I've also noticed that i don't hav ethe selection box for input type as shown in the manual. In the manual that box is shown in the first tab right under it's name.
Any ideas anyone?
