The Korg Kronos Rack!

Post by thekid »

Do you know when it will be done?
I ask myself if I wait for this, or make one myself pulling all the inside in a portable box (what a shame!) or even buy some integra...
I'm sure there's many people wanting this so much.
I can't travel with the keyboard and traveling with the rack would be a awesome way to be all the time "at home" having all the sounds with me.

Korg, do you hear this?!!!

I don't want to play the gadget ipad thing!

the same 50 people make this request.

And Per Korg, 3/4 yrs ago, they said there were no plans for a rack

So there you have it

Personally, I think a rack unit would be a fantastic idea.

A KRONOS rack would also have far greater appeal compared to all previous sound modules. It's never been done before. A module that has 9 sound engines HD-1 Streaming abilities. Sounds Epic.

This would have massive appeal to those who don't play KORG keyboards too, but would like to have all the KRONOS sounds and the ability to stream their sample libraries.

Regards
Sharp.

From a consumer point of view, I agree. I wish Korg had continued the modular design of the M3.

From a production point of view, I have to assume there's been no rack because it would canabalize sales of the keyboard version. I'm sure there is a rack version prototype in a R&D lab somewhere at Korg. Killer would be a rack with a wireless tablet interface.

The cost of ramp up to production of 2 competing, yet similar products is likely reason we don't see a module on the market.

I no longer have the church gig where I left my damaged Kronos set up with a controller keyboard. Sitting in the basement, it's tempting to hack it into a rack. I just don't have the expertise.

I seem to remember that our good friend sharp has already designed a Kronos rack version.....

Not a bad effort,indeed.

If only Korg would....Er Um....dreaming again.... :)

You could always do what I'll be doing next. I've been plugging my old PSR-740 into the Kronos for a rhythm section. I'm going to buy an old 740, rip the guts out and put it in a rack size box. Three connectors, MIDI and two audio - instant Kronos arranger!

What I would like is that rack with a detachable front panel. Leave the rack box in the rack and have that panel on a stand over my controller. That would rock!

I work mostly as a composer now a days, touring now and then. In my opinion, it would be a bad idea. I think having the engines would be great. The piano, organ, EP's and synths are awesome. But once you go box, in other words a pc running kontakt and/or something, the orchestral sounds just don't cut it. The logic thus dictates one might as well run your VST/AU/RTAS from a mac/pc via midi, thus a kronos rack would be obsolete since your would want a box that provides everything.

Perhaps make VST´s of the engines?

I respectfully disagree. Many of us don't want to deal with the computer interface outside of the studio. The Kronos interface is more ideally suited for live use in my opinion than using VST/AU/RTAS.

That is a good point. I would though argue that the problem with vst's are non-standardized controls. But as said, they could cut the strings, woods and brass for my part. Most of the perc as well. Not enough articulations and frankly, it sounds, eh, not pleasing. And no, its not a matter of taste. They are not good enough (sorry, will stop ranting now). BUT the engines are! But without the keybed and controllers? The whole point of the Kronos is its enormous flexibility. If ease of use is a point, a rack surely would cause more of a pain then pleasure? Lots of work setting up an external keyboard to work properly with a rack. If size is the main concern, buy a 73 or smaller. If size is not an issue, buy the 88 and be happy?

I'd suggest a Muse Receptor:

http://www.museresearch.com/products/

It's basically a PC in rack form. I believe it runs Linux and can run most Kontakt-compatible VSTs. Can't run VSTs that use their own engine, though something like East West Play might run on it (or they might make it compatible in the future).
