Connecting Pa900 with iPad (Unreal Book app)

Post by Martosax87 »

I use Unreal Book on my iPad for the lyrics, but I want to connect it with the keyboard. In this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZidTZkjLDfs a user from Serbia (or Croatia) explains how to control the keyboard from iPad, but my goal is to do the opposite - to choose the PDF file on the tablet from the Songbook in Pa900. Only one way messages - from keyboard to tablet.

Hope that everyone catch my idea.

Sorry for the english, it's not my mother tongue.

With Pa900 after selection of a songbook-entry a midi-message is sent (NRPN 98, 99).
If software-application Unreal-Book can receive an handle this midi-message you can use this for remote display.
It is necessary to study manual of unreal-book - maybe there is also a list like implementation-chart.
Pa900 is ready to be used with each application that is recognizing NRPN-midi-messages as songbook-entries.
kind regards

Thank you for the reply.

They are not exactly NRNP messages, but are Program and Controller, also channel selection (from 1-16) and window for MIDI In messages.

Still waiting for more replies from users that have experience with this app or similar.

if unreal-book is not to configure to open pdfs after receiving NRPNs you can not synchronisize display by selection of a songbook-entry.

selecting songbook-entries on Pa-Keyboard sends NRPM-midi-messages on global channel - nothing else like program-change or other controls to be used for synchronizing to display pdfs on ipads.

I just watched another video by the same user and there he shows that this app supports NRNP messages and he shows how it works. But he selects the songs only from the tablet. My goal is to select them from the keyboard.

You can try App SongBook+ instead of unreal book. It supports also remote selecting songs from keyboard to iPad.

You will find a manual how to configure that on the manufacturer web site of the KORG PA keyboards -> http://www.korgpa.com

I use unrealbook as singer, not having CCM for ipad to connect it with my PA.
But as far as I know, UnrealBook is able to receive midi messages and you can also use it in opposite direction, via keyboard.

UnrealBook is much cheaper than Songbook+, but choice is always on your side.

I've just tried unrealBook in opposite direction (select on Korg, unrealBook displays the right lyrics).

And unfortunately it does not work as it supposed to do. unrealBook does not save midi in messages (and it saves midi out automatically).

I have written to author and waiting for reply.

Well, I got an answer from UnrealBook:
--------
Right now unreal Book only supports sending of MIDI

In fairness, UnRealBook and OnSong etc., are FAR easier than the Songbook in the Korg when it comes to quickly creating set lists, or searching and finding requests, so it would make better sense to drive the Korg from the iPad/laptop rather than the other way around, IMO.

I agree. You'd be better off controlling the PA from the iPad.

I'm not famliar with the PA but I use unRealbook to control my Triton and my vintage M1 (I have them chained together) and it works like a charm.

Hi,
I use "forScore" for IPad. The app works perfect in both directions. You can receive MIDI messages from the Pa900 to select a score on the IPad that corresponds to the SongBook entry, and you can also send MIDI messages to select a SongBook entry that corresponds to the score on the IPad.

All other functions are similar to the SongBoo+ App in some cases the functionality is even better. You can get "forScore" in the AppStore. Cost is € 9,99, so it's much cheaper than SongBook+.

Hi Helmut, can you please help me with some tips on how to make forScore do what you describe. I'm struggling. Many thanks!

Hi Graham,
Sorry for the late reply. I do it the same way as you described it with one exemption. I use the “Learn Mode” in forScore for the reception and transmission of midi signals. So I can use my Songbook entry on the PA900 to select a song in forScore and vice versa. I never had the disconnection problem. I always switch off the IPAD first, and then switch off Pa900. Finally I disconnect the IPAD from the keyboard.
Best regards Helmut
