Volca Sample Help - Firmware Wont Update!

Post by junlimited »

I was very happy to receive my Volca sample in the mail today, but I tried to update it and am getting the "type error" when I try - however Korg suggests that if you are getting this error you should try and update the firmware which is what I'm doing! I have managed to successfully clear of the samples so it isn't a a communication issue. I've also tried updating through both the app and through my computer.

Any suggestions?

Two possible failures: volume is too low or your Volca's software is already the newest version.

Firmware says it v1.0 and I have tried at various volumes and successfully wiped the samples. I'm thinking it maybe half updated?

This is killing me! I've tried everything possible and scoured the web to find someone who also has the problem. Do Korg Reps frequent these boards?

Ensure iTunes or similar not playing in background?

On the PC, do you have any kind of EQ, Dolby, or other sound card effect enabled?

Make sure those are off if you're sending anything over.

Clearing samples is the simplest case and will still work even if the audio isn't perfect, but anything else needs better signal.

EDIT: Just check the release notes for the 1.22 update:
- Implemented support for iOS app "AudioPocket for volca sample"
- Added sample delete function. refer to manual.
Are you sure you're not on latest FW? Wouldn't you have to be to delete samples?

Here's the full story in a bit more detail:
I got the Volca on Friday, played with it for a bit and it was working fine.

I then decided to wipe the samples, which I did from the iPhone app and it worked fine.

I then tried to update from the iPhone App and it got a little way through the process and displayed "Type Error".

I have since tried to update many times using both my computer and my phone at varying volumes with no other sounds playing and nothing affecting the signal path. I've even used different cables. Every time Type Error is displayed.

Kazoo - It says that I'm running when i boot v1.00 PO.09 50.00. All the App does it play the same sounds that the computer would.

The box also makes slight humming sounds from time to time (when using both batteries and 9v power supply) so Im starting to think it's a fault with the unit and am going to look at returning it.

If you have headphones or an audio cable plugged in, try removing them. I also had to fiddle with the volume of my iphone to get it to work correctly--loud but not at full volume.

I was having problems trying to get it to update working and finally fixed it like this.

I have a PC, not a mac. I went to control panel>hardare and sound>sound

Then select your speakers and click properties.

Under properties there is an 'enhancements' tab. Make sure the 'disable all sound effects' box is ticked.

Then try the install protocol. Hope that helps. :?

I have exactly the same problem. I'm on firmware 1.22 trying to update to 1.3 but every time I try I get "Err typE". All it says for this error on Korg FAQs is to check you are running the latest firmware. That's no help at all. Sending this piece of crap back if I don't get an answer soon. I emailed them for support. No response yet.

Hmm ... looking at all these posts with "Err Type" when updating firmware:

Are you guys booting the device into firmware update mode as is said in the instructions? You have to hold FUNC and PLAY as you press the power button to set the unit ready to receive new firmware. It will display "Updt" when done right. (and you need fresh batteries)

I just tried playing the 1.30 update WAV into a normally booted VS and got the "Err Type" message so I just thought I'd throw this out there.

Maybe this helps someone who read the instructions a bit quickly

I had the same problem. Now fixed.
I work with a dual boot W7/Debian pc.
With the same sound card and software player, from Debian was not possible upgrade but I had no problem with W7.
Mysterious eh? :)
