USB Versus MIDI Connection to Audio Interface

Post by carabidus »

Anyone have opinions about how the Kronos should be hooked up? My interface is a Steinberg UR44. Thanks!

Depends completely on what you want to do. Midi is for sequencing notes. Audio is for, well, audio recording. What is it you're hoping to accomplish?

I absolutely love the Kronos programs and combis, but my overall objective is to use the onboard sequencer as little as possible and do virtually all of my composing work in Cubase.

Since Cubase and Steinberg-Interface work perfect together and there is no ASIO-Driver for Kronos, it is clear to me to use the UR44 for audio I/O and connect for this purpose Kronos to UR44s stereo analog inputs and outputs.

Regarding Midi you have two choices:
1) connect midi in/out from Kronos to midi in/out from UR44.
2) Connect Kronos via USB-Midi direct to your computer.

I guess the Kronos USB-Midi solution is smarter, in particular when you also want use the Kronos-Editor.
Best regards, Robert

The USB connection is *much* faster for MIDI data transmission than standard legacy MIDI ports. There have been other discussions about this here.

I can't think of a single reason to use legacy MIDI cables when USB is an option.

Thanks Stephen for making that clear once again :)
