Is Krome the right choice for me ?

Post by obad2586 »

Hi guys. I strongly need help on that matter since i don't have any near by music shops to try these out.

I only play live with bands playing pop/rock/funk/dance cover songs. I rarely record or do any songwriting or composing or any other home stuff. My main patches are brass/piano/e-pianos/synths/organs/pads.

I currently use the Roland Fantom X6 for almost 10 years. The truth is i never liked its sounds specially on stage with average PA systems and mixers. I also own a yamaha MO6 but never liked its sound, interface or effects.

I recently heard the demos of the kronos and find it very appealing. then the krome was released which is more affordable. So is it the right choice for me ? or should i go for kronos ? or maybe a yamaha ? I'm all about the quality of the sounds and the ease of doings splits and combi's during a performance. i love to hear your opinions. Thanks

While I would love a Kronos, two things swayed me toward the Krome; price and boot-up time. The Kronos takes about 4 minutes to turn on (maybe this has been changed with the newest version but I don't think so. The Krome take 1 minute. It would be a real drag if the stage power were to cut out and back on and have to wait 4 minutes for your instrument to come back to life. I plan on getting a UPS (battery-backed power supply) to solve this problem.

I have been very happy with the sounds in the Krome. The sounds you mentioned are pretty much what I use for gigs as well with the exception of organ, I have an XK3 for that. Splitting/layering is very easy and the versatility is terrific in regards to controller assignments, effects routings, etc.

If you have any specific questions regarding the Krome, I'm happy to answer them for you.

I love the Krome, and think it sounds fantastic.

In one of my bands it's the only 'board I use and it handles piano/ep/strings/synth/organ with ease. If you like programming your own patches it's super versatile too.

I also love the touchscreen interface and it's very easy to whip around live when you're used to it.

My only negative on this 'board is the keybed. The 61 version I own does not feel fantastic, and nor does the 88 version I've tried in store. But if you can get past that (and that's only my opinion, others may love it), it's a very good bit of gear indeed.

I moved to 73 and personally i find the keys just great, and everything else just great too. Still learning and exploring after a year of fun. Maybe i don't have enough to compare it to but it feels good to me. Never go back to weighted after this, at least in my current band setting

To assist OP, the 61 and 73 Krome actually have the same keybed. Korg calls it "semi-weighted" but that's really drawing a long bow, it's basically just "synth action" IMO. I have a semi-weighted Kurzweil and that's far more responsive when it comes to playing piano.

As you can see, some like it, some don't. Best to make up your own mind on that one as these things can be quite subjective.

You talk about using splits or combis. Well, the Kronos does have better polyphony which allows you to layer and play more sounds all at once.

I'd say it all depends on your budget, go for the Kronos if you can. Its a whole different ball game. Plus the Kronos has an added feature which I've not witnessed in any board so far: when you change from say patch 1 to patch 2, you can keep holding down the keys to keep patch 1 sounding without any distortion in FX and/or sustain, but the next time you lift your fingers off the keys and play again, patch 2 sounds.

Its a very nifty feature for on stage performances, there's no break in the music and you can keep things cool ;)
