Kronos CX-3 with rotary demo (vent)

Post by BSV73 »

Hey guys,

Not sure if this has been covered before..
Has anyone posted video/audio demos of the Kronos running through a neo instruments ventilator or similar pedal?

I'd really like to pick up some external gear to improve the CX-3 on the Kronos.

I'm not very good at making videos but I have used the Ventilator since it first came out. First, on a software Hammond from N.I. B-4. Then, with VB-3. I ran those two products through a Leslie 145 initially. The Church wanted to lower the stage volume and I was attempting to mic it from a back room area. I took a chance on the Ventilator which had just come out to see if it could simplify my setup. I was so impressed I started using them in my business. When I got the Kronos one of the first things I did was set it up to work with the Vent. I send the CX-3 out (dry) to output 1 which goes to the Vent, then the Vent outputs back into the Kronos inputs.

When the Ventilator II came out I upgraded. The Vent II is AMAZING! Besides sounding even better than the original, it has double the controls. My favorite is that you can set the mic distance for each rotor separately. This way I can have a more aggressive upper rotor while maintaining a less aggressive lower rotor so the bass is smoother, less choppy.

I service Hammonds in the Houston area and have installed about 20 Ventilators in churches that use Hammonds. Some have gone entirely to the Ventilator while others use it alone side their Leslie. The most common cause of a complete organ failure (no sound) is the Leslie blowing a fuse. Having the Organ already running through the Ventilator means they have a backup!

Maybe I can get a video going at some point.

I have both an original Ventilator AND a GSI Burn leslie pedal.. Both are very good with the CX3 engine (despite the recent CX3 update, the leslie sim isn't as good as these two sims).. You might consider the GSI Burn as it has MIDI, and 32 presets, and numerous different algorithms (including several different leslie types, and amps and other effects).. it's also switchable via Midi (from the Kronos) and it's updatable via midi so if new algorithms/features come out the Burn can be updated.. The Burn also has a real tube in it. Just a thought.. next time I have my Kronos set up I will see if I can get a demo for you..

Thanks for the info!

So you do like the GSI Burn better? It's nice to know because I will planning on getting one eventually.

+1 for a demo

I was wondering if the GSI reverb is at the end of the chain?

I will answer both questions as best I can..

Q. Do I like the Burn better than the Ventilator?
A. NO they are different.. If you're looking for a 122 leslie sound, I think the advantage goes to the Vent mostly for it's overdrive.. it is very warm and authentic sounding.. HOWEVER, the Burn is so much more versatile, with multiple presets, it's more open sounding (the vent really muddies certain frequencies)... and with numerous different algorithms available you really can get so much more out of the Burn.. The Vent is a one trick pony, but it's a great trick.. on the other hand, the Burn kills the Vent on features, functionality, with it's midi and presets and multiple algorithms.

Q. Is the reverb at the end of the signal chain?
A. I believe it is.. I don't see that anywhere in the manuals, and my Burn is not set up right now, so I can't double check but it's a very nice digital reverb and I'm pretty sure it's at the end..

One other point, the Ventilator doesn't have a reverb so there's another advantage there for the Burn.

If you route the audio from the Ventilator back into the Kronos audio inputs, it doesn't need reverb. You can use the entire Kronos effects processor with it.

That's true, you can route the Ventilator back through the inputs of the Kronos, that's a given, but when you purchase an effect like this, you're not always going to use it in one specific configuration, so I think there's value in the flexibility that the Burn has because it has built in reverb..

For the record, I have routed my Ventilator back into my Kronos and I didn't like it.. I found that it introduced a bit of noticeable noise, and it actually lost something.. That said, there is a LOT you can do with the Kronos effects post Burn/Vent and in a mix routing the Vent/Burn through the inputs might be a much simpler solution.

I just thought it was significant difference and something to be noted..

Last rehearsal we recorded a song called "Stormy monday blues" by
T-Bone Walker. I played the CX-3 from Korg Kronos through a
Neo-Minivent with a Yamaha FC-7 expression pedal.

The organ is very good and nice playing also. About close as to a Hammond without being the real thing i guess. Are you playing a Kx61 or 88 just curious. Good luck with the band. Talented bunch of players.

I received a reply from Guido, the reverb is usually after the rotary except for the first preset because of a software limitation.

I've asked if I could have canada duty on top of their final price and he said the final price is the one upon delivery,

I did this for a bit with my Burn - I was always fighting to get good consistent levels out of everything (it always seemed like it was too quiet or it would either clip the inputs on the Burn or the Kronos). Playing with limiters/compressors only helped so much and was sort of a PITA. I eventually just plugged the Burn outputs straight into my line mixer and it sounded SO much better after that. Plus, I have way more control over it in a gigging situation.

sounds just as good as any other real hammond simulation. that goes to show the Kronos can just about do anything. I'm a happy and almost-satisfied keyboard player ever since I got the K

The really big question basically concerns a comparison between 3 pedals. The Ventilator II, The Burn and the new Leslie.
