kaoss pad 3, midi receive extr ctrl

Post by mart v rijthoven »

Hello Everybody,

I use my kp3 to send midi-messages to max/msp. In global mode my kp3 can also receive midi messages from max. So i can control the x,y pad with my max patch in global mode. Now i want to do the same in ext ctrl mode, unfortunately, it looks like kp3 can not receive midi message in ext ctrl mode.

Does anybody know why this is so, and does anybody know a solution for my problem.

TIA

Mart

Are you trying to send a message through the KP?
There is no Midi Thru in the KP3.Messages that hit the in port control your pad (in global mode)but won't exit on the Midi Out.It's only when you tap control surface that it generates Midi out.(This will be the same for ext.control-except its designed for out put control ,so no need to read midi In).
If it had a Thru socket you could jack into that.USB carries no Thru.
Are you trying to send a signal from Max back into Max or are you incorporating another device(hardware)?
A midi merge box or splitter is useful in bigger setups but maybe your problem can be solved with software(an internal soft midi patch bay).

Thanks for the response!

I dont want midi thru.
Messages that hit the in port control your pad (in global mode)but won't exit on the Midi Out
This is exactly what i want in ext control mode. So that if i change a slider in max/msp the slider in the extr ctrl mode changes but will not send a midi message. So what i want is that if i change my slider in ext ctrl mode my slider changes in max/msp (that already works) but i also want if i change the slider in max msp the slider appearance on the kp3 changes.
(This will be the same for ext.control-except its designed for out put control ,so no need to read midi In).
What i want is to read midi in ext control, so that my sliders are at the same value in max/msp and on the kp3.

I hope this is possible and that you can tell me how. If it is not possible i dont understand why because in global mode it can receive so why not in ext ctrl mode?

tia

You better read the KP3+ manual, its better explait.
Ext. mode = Ext. MIDI Controller to TRANSMIT ONLY!
KP3+ Manual:
Using the KP3+ as a MIDI controller
In External Control mode you can use the KP3+ as a MIDI controller to control an external MIDI device such as a synthesizer, or a software synthesizer on your computer.
Example connections for External Control mode
MIDI IN
MIDI OUTELECTRIBE MX-SD
TIP: For details on the parameters that can be controlled, please refer to the owner’s manual of the device or software that you’re using.
TIP: Depending on the device or software that you’re using, there may be cases where parameters cannot be controlled, or cases where you must adjust settings first. Please refer to the owner’s manual for the device or software that you’re using.
Switching to External Control mode
Hold down the SHIFT button and press the PROGRAM MEMORY 8 (EXT.CTRL) button.
To exit External Control mode, press the SHIFT button.
MIDI message assignments in External Control mode
Assignments for the MIDI messages transmitted in External Control mode are made using the KP3+ Editor.
TIP: The KP3+ Editor can be downloaded free of charge from the Korg website (http://www.korg.com). For details on how to adjust these settings, please refer to the documentation included with the KP3+ Editor.
