Downgrading to OS 2.1.2

Post by traveler »

Hi all,

Sorry if this has been answered before.

How difficult is to revert to OS 2.1.2 after installing OS 3.0.2 on the Kronos?

Can simply install OS 2.1.2 on top of 3.0.2 if it is necessary?

I just want to make sure there is a straightforward way out in case I have issues with 3.0.2.

Thanks a lot for all your help!

Out of curiosity, why would you want to? OS 3 is quite an improvement - I'd never think of going back.

Yes, you can install version 2 over version 3. (I have done this successfully on both my units.) Just be certain to back up any customized programs because you must have the original factory programs/combis, etc., installed. (Without the originals installed, the Kronos will not boot after the rollback and you'll have to reinstall everything.)
Why would you want to do this? There's a documented problem with note borrowing after updating to version 3. For me, rolling back to 2 solved the problem quickly. I hated to give up the new features in 3, but had little choice.

One thing that can't be changed is the firmware update....there's only one anyway, but once done it will remain active regardless of any o/s version.
No one would want nor need to change it though and is a vital part to maintain.

Best Wishes.

You shouldn't have any difficulty downgrading whatsoever. I recently downgrade from 3.0.2 to 2.1 to 1.6 to 1.06 without problem.

Although not strictly necessary, I suggest you take a complete back-up of your current state to a PCG file. If you later need to downgrade, you can restore this PCG file along with the OS downgrade.

Just be careful of terminology

This is an OS downgrade, not firmware - I don't believe firmware can (or should) be downgraded

Cheers

Thanks for picking that up, Karmathanever - that was my mistake and I have corrected my post.

It's also worth mentioning that having ready access to a USB DVD Drive and the restore CDs can be invaluable when upgrading and downgrading the Operating System. Although the chance of something going wrong when doing so is minimal, if it does, having ready access to these items will help get your Kronos up and running again as quickly as possible.

Obviously firmware is not the o/s..... :)
I mentioned it as added information for reference.....hope it hasn't caused any confusion.

Best Wishes.

Thank you guys for your answers!

Fclef, does that mean that I have to bring back the unit to its original state with all programs/combis in order to downgrade erasing all my combis first?

I didn't think such a step was necessary. I thought just having the original preload.ksc on autoload should be enough for the machine to boot up after an upgrade/downgrade.

Am I wrong?

Perhaps someone else can give you a more definitive answer since I use a customized autoload file. FWIW, when I originally tried to do the rollback on my K73, I neglected to reload the original files and my K would not boot, forcing me to reinstall everything from DVD. On my K61, I did reload the original files first and the rollback was successful. (Basically the reboot problem involved trying to load files in OS2 that were saved in OS3.)
