Kronos as sound card with Mac Book Pro 15' Retina 2014 USB 3

Post by neomad »

Dear All,
I' ve recently obtained a new Mac Book Pro 2014, retina, with SSD 500 gb and 16gb ram, USB 3.

Sadly, I can not use Kronos as sound card anymore. Lot of glitches and latency is simply terrible.

I have tried with everything: using USB2 hubs, changing cables, etc. Seems that problems comes from USB 3 ports. I have contacted apple and posted in apple's forums. Nothing. The famous total audio integration gone forever.

Questions:
1 Is anyone using Kronos 1 with MBP2014 retina? do you have same probs?
2 Is anyone using Kronos 1 with another USB 3 device as sound cards?

I am totally disappointed and do not know what to do.
Thanks in advance for your comments

This problem isn't unique to Kronos, unfortunately many (USB2) soundcards have issues with USB3 ports. Does your Mac have any other ports you could use? I.e. Thunderbolt, with a bunch of adapters? I hear TB to FireWire works well, perhaps USB does too?

Virus Ti is also suffering with USB3 problems.

My Fireface UC, USB2 device on USB3 ports is OK though.

this seems to confirm my orriginal idea, that it would be a driver issue, seems the Korg driver does not support certain USB3 chipsets..

Does Mac allways use the same USB chipset?

This might be an issue that requires some attention from the Korg developer team

Thanks guys. I am surprised why uninstalling midi driver will affect audio. Anyway, I will try and let you know.

Have you tried the latest Virus beta software with the smallest USB lead you can find. This sorted it for me at last with USB3.

Hi all ! Tried, never works.
Updated 3.03, still not working.
Waiting for El Capitan...

Is there a way to test if my usb ports are faulty?
How can I reset coreaudio via software or force mac usb ports to run in usb 2.0 only?

Thanks in advance

Hi Neomad,

I also have a 2015 Macbook Pro Retina, and have had the same problem.
It appears to be unique to this generation of macs, and I don't believe your usb hardware is at fault. I also have a mid 2012 Macbook Air, set up identically with all the same software, and usb 3 ports. No problems with that machine whatsoever!
Interestingly, I ran out of ideas, but then happened to notice in Logic Pro X that my record delay was not set to zero samples, (not really thinking it would make any difference, but I tweaked it back to zero anyway). Oddly, my Logic audio through the Kronos came good! Unfortunately playing any other audio via another application from the mac still breaks up. Have you found that the sound breakup happens in a cyclic manner? Like a software clocking/ lack of sync not locked in? I really think it's a driver issue myself, and agree that it may be related to the specific chipset and the Korg driver combination.
Guessing from what I've read too that some other manufacturer's drivers are also having troubles with this chipset.
I know this doesn't really give you a solution, but know that you're not on your own, and if I discover anything else, I'll let you know :-)
The companions I can't live without: Kawai Acoustic Grand, Yamaha MontageM8x, Studiologic Numa Piano X GT.
Other important stuff: Novation Summit, NI Komplete Ultimate 14 CE, Omnisphere, EW Hollywood Orchestra Opus, Spitfire Symphony Orchestra, Pianoteq 8 Pro, Roland RD88.

Disappointing to learn you're still having problems with this, :(

There are several ways to re-set core audio, one method is to enter and run the following into the Terminal app.

sudo killall coreaudiod

Usually a re boot should do the same, but sometimes it doesn't.

System Information will show the usb ports and their configuration, together with a list of what's connected to them.
In theory, all usb ports should adjust their configuration automatically, but can require a second attempt by unplugging and re-connecting certain devices.
(not hard or thumb drives,though).
Using an usb2 hub is another way to re-configure the onboard usb3 port to usb2…..this would also be confirmed in the System Information.

My understanding is that Korg do not provide audio drivers for a mac……just midi, which most mac computers can work without anyway.
(The editor may need them...).

I have an imac, late 2013 and the Kronos does work with the usb3 ports......in my case I'm actually using it via a powered usb2 hub and am "lucky" it works well, together with Cubase Elements and Audacity.
Also use an aggregate set up,which provides an alternative audio playback via the imac and onto a mixer etc.

As a reminder.....it's important that the sample rates are set correctly.

Best Wishes.

Hello Pedro, thanks again for your outstanding support, clearly much better than apple's one.

I have compiled a few posts talking about the same, Apple needs to take care of us. I do have an appointment with my Apple store to find a solution.

Thanks for your reply and the interesting links.
I hadn't realised this problem affected pre-late 2013 macs....

Good luck with your appointment...hope they can solve this.

Will also try other things I have in mind....some wild theories etc....without any guarantee,though...

Best Wishes.
