“In many Electribe 2 and Electribe 2S, the top panel has a convex curve which means that some of the pads, especially in the centre of the top row, are close to being flush with the top panel. However, we assure you that there is no effect on the functionality of their Electribe even if the top of some or all of the pads is close to the top panel of their Electribe.

I got this info via email through a reseller who sold me the unit. I assume they got the info from a Korg representative.

I got a similar response from the German Korg trade representative through the reseller (the trade rep. did not have anything official from Korg though, at the time). I ended up returning it though, since two pads were much harder than the other, and the reseller did not feel like exchanging it... Well, bad for him, since I reordered from a "better" reseller. Hopefully on the new one the pads are at least all uniformly responsive.

I must say that it is strategically bad of Korg to have a design where the clearance of the pads is so low: this way any misalignment is seen directly by all. With a more standard design you would not be able to see the problem, and everyone would have been happier (including Korg, but especially resellers that need to handle the returns). It is just bad industrial design to rely on tolerances that can not be expected to be achieved.
