Or they just throw the towel in and never do another update and abandon the electribe all together.

This is what I would bet is going to happen. Korg already "announced" that the recent was the last update.

Now we need someone to develop an app that can generate full packages for a dual boot Electribe.

Loving my new e2s however if I find out I could have purchased an e2 that would serve both purposes and I picked an equally priced counterpart that only serves one purpose WTF.

It seems as though 1 box and less greed, perhaps a little honesty and even charge a couple dollars more for 2 in 1 would have been the proper thing to do

Somebody screwed up large.

I'm pissed.

Damn man. I have the grey e2 and really wanna do this. I've been considering getting the sampler to go with it but if it's really switchable which by what I'm reading it seems like it is then I guess I should just try it.
So it's really all legit and totally safe? When I revert back to original os will all my patterns still be there ?
Also, if I don't get the factory samples can I use that space for my own samples?

Just do a all pattern backup to be safe before you do the swap

I just made the switch and whenever I sample something it only plays back through the bitcrusher...

There's definitely some weird inconsistancies in this OS switch when it comes to things like this, I'm seeing it too. It's an exciting concept that seems to mostly work, but it's not a full on switching between sampler and synth versions yet.

I think people getting mad at Korg for this are sort of missing the point, as they clearly didn't intend or want this to happen. The fact that the sounds and stock patterns for each unit reside in ROM onboard and can't be restored with this hack to me shows that they always intended to have each unit be only it's own device.

I also think that this wasn't Korg's long term game plan. I have no knowledge of how OS's are coded whatsoever, but the fact that this hack, imperfect it may be, was so blindingly easy? Is this common? Or is it the result of some fundamentally sloppy work on Korg's part? I really like the new Electribes but I'm also aware of their seemingly "thrown together" characteristics. Is this another example?

I just tested if this also happens when you record samples into those slots instead of import them, and unfortunately it does. Certainly not a showstopper though.

I always thought that KORG did really sloppy work on the OS of these electribe: - /
so if there is also a bad security it does not surprise me really ..

they delivered a half-finished product on the "software part"
and for the "hardware part" ... we all know the issues. ..
