Anybody up for a challenge? (Sound design)

Post by benbabylon »

I would love for somebody to try to make a great sound that emulates that electric-piano-sounding sound in "Don't Trust Myself (With Loving You)" by John Mayer. It is a really cool sound . . . almost like a rhodes put through a wah? I don't know, but I would love for somebody to try to emulate it on the Kronos!

The main guitar effect is the Adrenalinn III preset #73 Filter Tremolo, but the electric piano-like sound could also be a guitar, through the ADIII preset #160 Auto Wah. John Mayer seems to favour this effects procesor in his songs.

The Kronos already has a couple of posible EP-based candidates. I-A026 T.Costner MkV Fusion SW2, with the attack sounds taken back a little and a bit of eq, plus there's I-A033 McComb Reed EP200/WahKn7 - as the name suggests, knob 7 adds wah, to taste, again eq to take some of the top end off.

Can anyone synthesize a human voice in Kronos, like that was in Triton Moss (Program F126 called "Laughter") ? I've found it difficult to create human formants and voice with Kronos, due to lack of double bandpass filters, compared to Moss. That's a real challenge.

And second thing I miss from Triton - I cannot make techno or trance grooves with Kronos. There are some trance\techno grooves driven by Karma, but Karma GE are somewhat limited so lack of arpeggiators are putting me off.. Can anyone explain how to make a trance groove on Kronos without first buying Karma software?

@Benbabylon: try out Ep1 synthesis (Mark 1 or 2), and add the autowah FX in the EXi main page (not IFX). Adjust your FX (wha effect to "auto", not pedal), you should make a sound very close to what you need.

I just got my New Kronos8 3.0.3 and my experience with my old Triton extreme is making it not such a headache to get around kronos. The core of the system is much like the triton. So its just a matter of catching up. Any way thats not my point here.

I composed new songs on the Triton extreme before i got rid of it almost 4 years ago cause it was too expensive to travel outside the country with, new country every year or 6months.
Two songs were based on specific combis that make worlds of magic happen around a simple finger run over a composition. I can still play the songs but the combi sound i composed them on via the Triton extreme is a big factor.

Its some kind of LFO pad with sweeps through intensity and something else and/or more. I want to recreate it on the kronos but its more complex and would take a while.
I recreated the other Combi yesterday ,the other one i had is simpler ,just adding auto wah and stacking organs and enhanced clavi programs in a recipe of fx and eq/mix levels. Thats took a 4 hour session digging around plus learning the kronos system.

This particular Combi section LFO pad is a lot more involved that what i have done before and i hope i can find an already similar combi in the kronos to rebuild to fit. Thats what i had going for me with the other simpler one i got done yesterday with Clav and organ timbre mix. I found a combi with similar clav+auto-wah-fx timbre which is similar to the one I used on triton (other than kronos is much clearer and then some), then i just replaced the other timbres with organs, bass and a drum track.
The LFO pad long phase sweeps over intensity and other parameters have me feeling more than just challenged.
Heres a video of poor sound quality via a cheap cool pix camera from back in late 2012. I was sitting around the house practicing after not playing for months because of travel.
Its not the first song in the video with the high gain piano. Its the second song with the delay, LFO sweep pad and basic drum track.
Any one who can recreate this or has a triton to find this on and work the parameters and sepcific programs out for me to have on the Kronos? I would love to have this sound again for this song, especially on the kronos.
