Sorry for pause - I got this working a week ago but no time to post.
Two of these

We will call them MS1 and MS2
Midi keyboard out goes to MS1 IN/1. MS1 OUT/1 goes to MS2/IN/1, MS1 OUT/2 goes to E2 IN
E2 Out goes to MS2/IN/2
MS2/Out/1 go to Ext Device
So notes from the external keyboard gets split by M1 and sent to the E2 and to M2. Notes from the E2 go to the M2. The M2 merges the midi signals (from either the midi keyboard or the E2 out) together and sends to the external device.
In my case the Ext Device is a midi splitter feeding through to a Micro Q, Shturhi, Volca Keys, Bass and Sampler. That setup will change shortly.
It's a hell of a lot of fun.
