Krome v Kronos

Post by hartlas »

Hi all,

Long term Korg user (M1 OWFD Triton Krome), bought a new Krome 73 last year and a Triton. Love the Krome but want to do more with samples - the Triton samples but the storage (floppy disc) is slow to load.

I bought the Krome as I couldn't afford a Kronos. Now that secondhand prices have fallen I may be able to afford one but are the sounds really that much better than a Krome? YouTube comparisons haven't convinced me that the Kronos is that much better. I'm attracted to the Kronos because of the sampling and internal storage of samples and the fact that it autoloads.

Has anyone reading this owned both? I'd love to hear peoples thoughts... I'd probably have to sell the Krome and Triton to buy the Kronos - is that a fair swap? PS I don't program sounds ( too lazy) just use the onboard sounds but may tweak a little!)

Thanks in advance!

Krome v Kronos

I don't own a Kronos but have played it many times, and have owned a Krome 73 as well as Triton Pro, M3, M1 and many others. (I just couldn't get on with the Krome because of lack of aftertouch, but the sounds and the display interface were excellent.)

For sampling you need the Krome or the Yamaha XF range. I have the XF7 and loads of flash memory which makes a major difference for speed of starting up. The Flash RAM means the samples are there when you switch on, no loading required.

I got frustrated with the M3 as every time I wanted to sample I got as message saying 'out of memory' even though I had expanded the memory.
The XF just works ! I wouldn't consider any sampler facility without flash ram. I believe the Kronos has flash ram, so that would be a good buy, but is not cheap.

Just bought a Korg PA4x Pro, but not specifically for sampling, although it does have a sample facility. Amazing arranger keyboard !

I loved my Triton Pro, but sold it some time ago, as the display wouldn't refresh fast enough when I was using the sequencer, and I got really fast at that. The Krome and the Pa4X Pro have no such issues.

If you can afford either the Kronos or Yamaha XF go for those, but I didn't get the Kronos as I didn't need all those extra sound engines, would have been wasted on me.

I can give you a pretty decent opinion

Home / practice gear

OASYS 76
Triton Le 76

Live Rig

Krome 61
Triton Le 61

I just purchased a Kronos 73 to replace the Live Rig

My main reason for purchasing the Kronos is I am a huge fan Jordan Rudess of Dream Theater. Cause honestly the Krome and Triton have all the sounds I will ever need.

Are the sounds the best ?? Nope BUT no one in the crowd at the club/venue is going to know the difference.

My bandmates say they like some of the Krome/Tritons sounds better ( what does a drummer know right ?? )

BUT

For sure the Kronos has WAY more sounds .... The pianos alone make the Kronos an amazing machine

I've recently started into sampling and the Krome can not sample ..... Never mind store samples or have them load when you power up the synth ( My Triton Le has the sampler option BUT it's not worth using )

Storage on the Kronos is incredible with the option to expand

Krome gives you 127 free spaces in Progs and Combis to store created patches. Not huge but it's enough.

Kronos is pretty easy to use if you've used a Krome or OASYS before

Kronos 73 although not an overly large keyboard is still " heavy-ish "

Kronos RH3 keybed takes ALOT of getting used to if you haven't played real keys in many many years

Kromes keybed ( 61 ) feels almost flimsy .... Even compared to the Tritons.

My honest opinion .... If you ( like me ) are just playing covers and don't need the power of a workstation .... The Krome is more than enough. The Krome will also leave a substantial amount of cash in your pocket.

With 5 KORGS in my house my wife had put a ban on anymore lol

If you want pics or side by side comparisions or sounds I get anything you like

Have a great weekend.

PS: I love my new Kronos BUT for sure its complete overkill for cover tunes. But for playing Dream Theater stuff at home it's pretty much perfect
