low volume

Post by barry murphy »

I make good midi files into audio by recording from my pa3x to studio one 3.
The results are good and I have posted some of the midis on CSS site.
Some people claim the volume is lower than it should be when I make a CD or send as a email.
I have tried to increase the volume which I set to about -7 db but it clips and I don't know how to fix this. Should I be using some effects? I am not very experienced at this. more info, I know will be required but at the moment, I'm unsure what to write.Advice would be gratefully received

Hi,

Look for decreasing the dynamic range of your track using a compressor (fx). It will push down volume peaks a bit, so that afterwards you can increase the volume of the track without clipping. Be careful to not exaggerate the compression, because it may reduce the expression of your music.

Is it better done on the clipping track or can I do it on the main output?

Compression is usually applied to the main output, but also has its uses elsewhere on individual tracks to provide a specific effect e.g. on vocals (compressed "radio" effect) or sustaining a decaying sound such as guitar. Try both and see which works best, and compare the end result to other folks work. It's all part of learning the art.
