Questions about live shows with the E2S...

Post by Mokushi »

Hello, guys. Up till now I had two live shows with my Electribe2s in combination with the Roland Voice Transformer 3.
It sounds pretty magical and all, but I have some issues with the volume levels. I know that when you use hardware, the sound will always be lower than a compressed and mastered track. This seems to be a problem when I have to play after a DJ whose tracks are all loud as hell. I reach the maximum volume of the knob and still sound a bit quieter. I'm not much of a hardware guru, so I turn to you (like Mel C). Should I find some sort of amplifier pedal or something to try and match the amplitude of mastered tracks? How do you guys bypass this or do you think it is even a problem at all? I can\t put compressor or limiter on the Master FX, because I need that for delays and reverbs almost constantly :D
Also, I've started to remove the Filter effect on most channels, since it seems to be stealing voices as well, which is very annoying. I've inserted my vocals in a channel instead of just sending it through, so I can manipulate it in all sorts of creative ways. Sometimes when I start chanting, other channels disappear, which is normal, but still, kind of silly, when there are just 4 to 5 channels active and none of them uses stereo or delay effects (except the MFX, of course).
Thanks!

I guess an external compression and eq of some sort may be required to match a similar sound. There is this nice Q&A with Kink, producer and live performer (House / Techno) on Gearslutz where he answers on his routine:

Interesting, thanks.
Perhaps not very informative links, but something to work with...

If you are plugged into a sound system, kindly ask for more gain from the sound man/person. That's what the mixing board is for! :)

I had an SPL Dynamaxx behind my gear for exactly this reason.

Dont't get scared by the price tag, they come around 250-350€ used. The device is very easy to setup with only two knobs. It is sturdy built and has two hypnotic LED-bars.

It glued the sounds coming out of my live-gear together. It made my liveset sound more CD-like. I sold him. Still miss him sometimes :(
