Nanokontrol studio with gadget mini review

Post by Hankastral »

Just got a korg nanokontrol studio. Anyone else have one? **originally posted this in general ipad section**

I specifically bought it for gadget and my feelings about it are mixed.

Bluetooth works great. Gadget sees it immediately and they both sync brilliantly.

But it is hardwired to gadgets mixer. You cannot create your own mappings (as far as I can tell at least). Even the scenes disables when it connects to gadget.
Also (like a lot of mackie control devices to be fair to korg) it is not very practical to control more than 8 tracks. You can get to these tracks by pressing the right track key but you only move up in track increments of one which means that you get lost pretty quickly because track 1 is now 2, 2 is now 3 etc. So if you want to control more than 8 tracks you may need two of these controllers or (as I'm going to try) use the nanokontrol for tracks 1-8 and the screen for 9-16.

Overall though it does add to the fun. Here you can see it connecting with the gadget mixer: https://youtu.be/i-5Wnl7vLkY

Hey Hank. Thanks for posting. I just got my NanoKey Studio today to use as a Gadget controller (and hopefully Ableton Live soon) and I'm pretty impressed with it. I think I'll pick up the NanoKontrol Studio too. They'll look pretty sexy next to my Electribe Sampler :P

Very interesting to watch your video. Keep us posted about using two of them together!

Nanokey looks great but I generally need more keys as I play keyboards. I use the microkey 49 air. But the chord pads and scale mode give a lot of power to users if you know what to do with them.

Sounds like you've got a good setup there

Best

Hank
