Grease for M1 keys

Post by Danr »

Hi
I'm in the middle of cleaning up an M1 keyboard for someone which has a few sticking black keys.
I have removed one to clean it and need to replace the white grease but not too sure what type it is or where to get it.
Any help appreciated.

Yamaha key grease is the stuff to use.

Whatever you do, avoid lithium grease, or mineral oil-based greases, in general. They are likely to do more harm than good.

That's great, thanks,
I was thinking of maybe getting a small tube of silicon grease as it's not harmful to plastics.
Only need a very small amount.

Silcon grease has the wrong consistency. It would make the key action extremely sluggish, and the keys not very nice to play.

I'm fairly sure that silicone grease comes in a wide range of densities, so pretty sure you can find one to your need. Ask a specialist - if they have more than a few types, then they likely know what they're talking about. Take the softest in a small quantity and give it a try... Wipe off if it doesn't work and try another.

Thanks for the reply.
The keyboard's done now and has been returned to the owner. Given more time I would have looked around for an alternative as the Yamaha grease is
quite expensive.
P&P was the same cost as the grease even though it's a very small tub.
