MIDI THRU Capability

Post by Korg_Krusty »

Hi, Can you configure MIDI out port as a MIDI THRU to relay data from the MIDI in port directly to a second sound module ?. I'm playing the 61 note Kross from a master keyboard with only one conventional MIDI output. I also have an iPad with Korg Module / Synthology piano installed which I use from the USB MIDI out of the master via an Apple camera connection kit. Unfortunately, USB MIDI cuts the classic MIDI port ( known issue with the master ) so I cannot layer Kross and Module sounds, even with a MIDI - Lightning interface which also works fine from the master MIDI output. Apart from a dedicated MIDI THRU distribution box, I can't think of a way to do this.

Many thanks in advance, Den

I had the same problem; I can tell you how to fix it.

Short answer: not really. Not very easily.

Longer answer: What you want to do is to buy a Behringer BCR2000.

Explanation, copied from an email I sent to someone about it:

* The BCR2000 makes up for the Kross's lack of MIDI Thru
* The BCR2000 makes up for the Kross's lack of assignable knobs

I use the KORG Kross not only in its own right, but also as a master keyboard for driving other synths over MIDI (volcas and a Waldorf Blofeld). I want the knobs on the BCR2000 to be able to affect the settings of these other synths, as well as getting the MIDI CCs to the Kross so that it can record the signals into its linear sequencer. The major hurdle is that the Kross lacks a MIDI Thru port. I can send MIDI CCs to the Kross from the BCR2000, but the Kross does not pass them on.

The solution:

Equipment:
KORG Kross
Behringer BCR2000
3 MIDI cables

Set the BCR2000 to operating mode S3.
Connect the Kross's MIDI In to the BCR2000's MIDI Out B.
Connect the Kross's MIDI Out to the BCR2000's MIDI In.
Connect the BCR2000's MIDI Out A to the rest of your rig.

The reason this works is that the Kross receives the BCR2000's MIDI signals so that it can record them in its sequencer, and although the Kross does not pass those signals through its MIDI Out port, the Behringer also merges its output signals into the MIDI stream that it receives from the Kross, and
then sends through Output A.

Hi,

Many thanks for your very informative reply - the Behringer unit looks amazing but I will probably go for a Kenton 1 in to 5 out MIDI THRU 5 box now that you have confirmed that MIDI THRU is not possible on the Kross. I need a simple set up on stage to layer the Kross and iPad Module from my 88 note master keys.

Kindest regards, den
