BEAT IT sounds

Post by eltmatt »

Anyone have any patch suggestions for covering Michael Jackson's Beat It? Not the gong, I've sorted that but the EP and strings/choir?

I haven't tried this but i'd do this:

Prepare a Combi with 5 programs. Split the first 3 from C1-A#4 and the other 2 from B4 all the way up. Those would be your EP and a soft pad. For the EP i'd go with programs A062 (Reed EP Chorus) because the timbre is similar, and the A067 (Phantom E Piano) for the attack portion. I tried the Dyno pianos and they wouldn't cut it, but this one has served me for this s**t in the past. Then i'd go with any of the first four SlowSynt programs (D052-5). The pad and the A067 try lowering the volume so the sound doesn't get too muddy. Rout these to an EQ7 and cut some lower frequencies (around 80hz). There's another element to the sound that creates this tremolo effect at the end of each chord but it's almost indistinguishible; if you're really picky i'd route the slowsynt to a Tremolo effect (maybe for this add the tremolo on FX1 and then chain it to FX2, the EQ the EPs are using) and add one of the SW switches to bring tremolo up.
On the right side you'd have your strings, and they sound really vintage to me, so i'd go with a combination of programs G050 and B042 an octave apart. Add en EQ to cut lower Freqs and a small phaser/stereo flanger with a Freq of around 10 or maybe 15, and 50:50 (not so dry nor so wet)
So you'd end up with your EPs/pad on your left hand and strings on your righ. Use the mixer so that the strings won't cover you EPs. Also i haven't tried this so if you see the pad isn't working just take it out and use those two EPs instead. for MFX i'd go with a pollyensamble or maybe a chorus on MFX1; MFX2 would be a small Reverb and in TFX a Red Compressor. Hope this helps!

Also i based those suggestions by listening to this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ntGJudIsmk
