Problem updating Kronos 2 firmware 1.08

Post by Divyx »

Hi all.
I have problem updating Kronos 2 firmware 1.08.
I'm using windows 7 64 bit. Kronos 2 os is 3.0.3 which i just updated without any problems.

Prodecures i have done are:
Installed latest midi drivers.
I boot up Kronos to firmware update mode by holding enter and pause buttons on power up. I enter the firmware update mode correctly, screen is blank and bank I-B is lit. Then i connect USB cable. I launch the kronos updater.exe and i always get error "Update device is not found" no matter what USB port i try to plug it in my computer.

This is crucial update i think because it fixes "an error has occurred blaa blaa" problem and how about it, just couple gigs ago over thousand people witnessed when this error occurred during playing normal piano program in classical piece i performed with one singer. Needless to say, the booting up and loading things again took some time and i've had cold sweat and mistrust ever since. I wasn't too happy about this. Any ideas what i could try to do?

Is there alternative way to update firmware to kronos 2?

Thank you! :)

Sigh, actually it now seems that the Kronos 3.0 editor can't communicate with my kronos 2.0 either.

A few months ago I decided to up-grade my firmware and had some problems also. I finally had success, but not on the first try. After going to the Korg support web site, and installing the proper drivers in my PC, I printed the install instructions. Somewhere in the instructions is says to follow these steps exactly, and believe me, they're serious. With the printed instructions in hand, I slowly worked through the procedure, and got it done. One other thing, I can't remember if I originally used the USB port (R) or (L), but one didn't work for me. Try switching ports.

To my understanding there's only 1 usb port in Kronos available for firmware update operation, i've connected to it. The other 2 usb slots are flat ones aka "connect external device" ports.

I've pinned the problem bit further. For some reason as an example, the kronos editor wants to use game port 1 as midi in and midi out, i get error message that "there are currently no midi out ports selected for use with this program" then i have 2 options, either microsoft GS wavetable synth, or Game controller 1. I choose game controller 1 and get error message "Unable to open the Game controller 1 Midi Out port, the game controller 1 midi out port appears to be a single-client MIDI device and is likely already in use by another program. It will not be used in this session. Please see the troubleshooting guide pdf for more details". I did not see any troubleshooting guide PDF file anywhere either. When i check the midi out port from kronos editors preference page, it says "unassigned".

I'm pretty clueless with this all and don't know what i'd try next. I've uninstalled drivers and such prodecures already, and naturally rebooted computer and kronos many times.

Sorry for the confusion. The USB (L) & (R) port reference I used above is for the connection to your computer, sorry. Here's a quote from the instructions, "Connect the KRONOS’s USB B port (the single, boxy connector, as opposed to the two
flat connectors) to a USB A port on the computer.
Note: it is important that USB is connected AFTER step 2, above."

Hey Divyx, I'm still thinking about your issue. You mentioned the Korg editor, midi, game ports, etc... When I did my upgrade all I did was download the driver to my PC, and the zip file from Korg. So the 'editor' had nothing to do with the procedure. Just to make sure you are looking at what I did, here is the link I used. http://www.korg.com/us/support/download/

Hi! Thanks for the help bro. That's what i have done. In this case the editor tells us that it also fails to connect with my kronos 2 ( i've checked that it receives system exclusive etc ) so it's no wonder that the firmware updater can't see kronos either, if the editor can't connect to it. :( Perhaps i just try with different computer and loan someones laptop. I have no clue what's up with this but my computer is pretty darn old.

OK, hang in there, you'll get it figured out. Have you tried a different cable? Just a thought.

I also want to tell you that the fault that you had during your show sounds like what I had before I up-graded my OS & firmware. Since I did both, I have NOT had an issue with shut downs and messages. I hope you have the same results. Good luck.

I did try different cable yeah. I guess the kronos usb midi drivers are propably not done so good, considering this is ofc my newest synth and every other synth hasn't ever failed to connect via usb with this computer. Kronos just can't connect. Nevertheless, i have to try with different computer or something, i'm sure i'll get it done. I'm not in a hurry next tour starts in 2 months or so, so there's plenty of time luckily. :)

The most plausible reason for the firmware updater not to work is that you have set the korg midi driver to 64 bits only, to check and modify this do the following steps:
- go to the start menu again and press the korg menu again
- then select midi tools
- then select: install korg midi driver
- then configure
- be sure that in the advanced setting below the word BOTH is selected, so that it uses 32 and 64 bits midi in ports

Now it should work in theory, if it doesn't another possible problem could be the 10 registered midi device limit of windows.

to check that follow the next steps:
- in the windows start menu left bottom of your screen select the all programs menu
- then select the korg folder
- then korg usb midi driver tools
- then select program: uninstall korg midi drivers
- select next
- now you will see all the registrations of midi devices on your windows
- press the option button
- uncheck the delete korg devices only
- press ok
- now you can uninstall any driver on your windows

in the midi registrations between 0 and 9 you need to see your korg driver, if it isn't there, then probably the windows programs won't find it, then delete one of the doubles or an unused one in the 0-9 area and connect your kronos again to install the driver automatically in that 0-9 area.
(only device drivers registered between 0-9 are recognised by most programs)

Another thing could be that you have multiple devices registered, whenever you use a different usb port on a windows computer the driver will register itself also on that channel, which results in double registrations. In that case:

- check the doubles (with the same name, so that one of each exists
- and remove them
- then add the kronos again and it will be registered in one of the free slots
- also be sure that the kronos driver wasn't registered on midi device higher then 9

Thank you so much. 10 minutes after i read your post i had fixed the issue and update went smoothly, and editor is working aswell. I had horribly many copies of all USB devices registerd and Kronos were in as number 14 onwards.

Again, thank you super much. :)

Just a word of thanks QuiRobinez for your well defined explanation.

We just ran into this issue, found this post, saw your answer, and successfully upgraded our K2 firmware in first try after following your directions.

We see that folks are also running into the same Windows MiDi black hole with Minilogue updates. The key in both is using the Uninstall KORG USB-MIDI device software that korg provides, which you mentioned, again, thanks!!!

Me too!

I am having the exact same issues. But I do not use my computer for any kind of gaming. (I have used it a few times with other music gear with no issues. I have installed uninstalled and reinstalled the Kronos 2 driver for windows. Tried other cords... But I am yet to figure out what to do. I wonder if there is a setting on the Kronos that is keeping my PC from seeing the Midi Port. But both the Update 1.08 and using the Editor are not happening at all. I see that the original poster here got it to work but if anyone could walk me through it a bit I would be very grateful....kinda getting to that point where my own frustration is making this all harder then it probably is. I have had to do some changes in the past with upgrades for other synths but this has me boxed in.
Help-

================================================

I also checked that I have "both" chosen (I do) and there is an option that says >> "Suppress device number in the port name of the first device" < this one is not "checked" Is that a box that I should have checked?
Thanks.
