I'm afraid I have to agree. Supremely talented player, there is no doubt about that, but his music leaves me completely cold.

I've been a JR fan for many, many years. I still feel this way sometimes though too. Sometimes it just hits, and sometimes it really doesn't. I guess when it doesn't it's exceptionally cold?Derek Cook wrote:I'm afraid I have to agree. Supremely talented player, there is no doubt about that, but his music leaves me completely cold.
For me the MOST 'moving' piece he's done is the solo from Kindred Spirits.

LTE probably showed a better side of him, whereas DT seems to be about who can widdle the most notes. I feel the same about Mike Portney. Superb drummer and I love him in the stuff he does with Neil Morse, where I can actually listen to and enjoy the songs and thus the awesome talent on display
I think the only DT track I have ever come close to liking is "Pull Me Under" - superb start, but it and the whole album are (IMO) marred by a drum sound that just jars with me (too high in the mix and tuned too high for my taste - and Peter Gabriel had the right idea on his 3rd and 4th albums when he banned the use of cymbals!).

Have to agree on that I'm afraid. Too much noodling going on...benny ray wrote:Great player but I can't connect to his music.Derek Cook wrote:I'm afraid I have to agree. Supremely talented player, there is no doubt about that, but his music leaves me completely cold.

They had absolutely no say in any of the production for the I&W album. Portnoy absolutely hated the drum sounds on that album. It is the work of David Prater.Derek Cook wrote: I think the only DT track I have ever come close to liking is "Pull Me Under" - superb start, but it and the whole album are (IMO) marred by a drum sound that just jars with me (too high in the mix and tuned too high for my taste - and Peter Gabriel had the right idea on his 3rd and 4th albums when he banned the use of cymbals!).
If you want some DT songs where they are not just seeing how many notes they can fit in one measure, try out:
I Walk Beside You
Peruvian Skies
Lifting Shadows Off a Dream
Forsaken
One Last Time
Misunderstood
