How to connect Korg Kronos to PC?

Post by onetlittle »

Hi, :D

have bought a USB to MIDI IN/OUT cable to connect my Kronos with my PC using the Editor. Although i have all Firmwares up-to-date, it wont connect, saying:

"A compatible Korg Kronos v3.1 with OS 3.1 or higher was not detected"

I want to control my Kronos with my PC, cus its more comfortable with my big screen instead od Kronos tiny touschscreen.

Any help?

you need to update the Kronos firmware/software to the latest or at least 3.1 version

Since you're getting that error message Amit is probably right.
But make sure you have the KORG Midi driver. Just search KORG on your PC and you should be able to find it. Should be there if you've downloaded the Editor. Also there are problems with running on 64bit.
You didn't mention whether the Editor opens though? What happens when you open the Editor software if it does open?
So all that being said could it be in the cable?
Just some suggestions to try.

I have this little Window of the Korg USB/MIDI driver:

User Mode Driver: 1.15.00.03

Kernel Mode Driver: N/A

There are 3 LEDs on that cable adapter i bought:

..but only the USB one is lightning up, so the cable may broken...

There should be no need for a USB to MIDI cable. The Kronos connected directly to the PC via USB will enumerate as a MIDI device. Install the latest Korg MIDI driver files first, to avoid the wrong driver being associated with it.

voip is absolutely correct.

You don't need anything that says midi on it. This is the type of cable I use and it works fine.

Hi onetlittle,

You should see something appear after Kernel Mode Driver. The Korg driver is sometimes a bit tricky to install, depending on your PC OS version. Power and connect your Kronos via USB to your PC. Make sure to use the "square" USB jack on the Kronos side (type B connector). Open the Korg Driver Setup Utility. Click on the Start button if needed.

I solved it, but not with the Midi in and outputs. Ijust searched in the basement and found an old Printercable, which had the old USB-B connection and it worked :D (MIDI Cable goes back to Amazon)

Another Question:

How can I hear the Kronos keyboard sound(If i play a Program or Combi for instance) realtime from the Audio-Output of my Computer. So the Sound is directly routed through the PC. So that i can hear the Kronos sound, aswell as the PCs sound with the Same headphones?

Thx to all btw, you are a big help to get going :)

If you decide to connect your Kronos to another keyboard, you'll find that MIDI cable useful.

The Kronos will actually appear on the PC as two devices, a MIDI and an audio device. Bear in mind that the Kronos' audio output via USB will be 48kHz 24bit and will be in stereo, and not available as individual timbres. Sending audio from PC to Kronos is also possible.

The Kronos Main Volume will have no effect on the output level via USB, but the Master Volume will.

Yeah im rooting my PC sound through the audio input in the backside of KRONOS, but it sounds horrible, so mich worse than connecting the Smartphone directly with my headphones :?

Any other global setting , which are important?

What is the nature of the horribleness of the sound? Is it distorted or does it sound "thin"?

What sort of cable is being used for routing the audio from the smartphone to the Kronos' audio in? The Kronos inputs are mono, so if the source sound is stereo, the cable should "break out" the L and R outputs to separate jacks to connect to audio in 1 and 2, respectively, on the Kronos, else the sound may appear "thin". If the sound is distorted, the levels will need adjusting. The rear panel input level switches should be set to Line (pressed in), and the rear panel level potentiometers set to the lowest sensitivity, then adjust the smartphone output level (normally somewhere between half and maximum) followed by the Kronos' input level and the level and pan controls on the Kronos Audio Input/Sampling page. Normally channel 1 is panned hard left and channel 2 hard right. The Audio Input/Sampling pages are available in Global, Program and Combi modes. The Program and Combi Audio Input pages have the benefit of a level meter to help in setting the levels.

Normal audio cable, but the input signal can not be set to MONO. Line is pressed. May be the channel adjustement, but im not experienced enough for that :D
