Kaoss

Post by mintjamman »

So Korg gave us a cut down Kaoss feature with version 2, that was a surprise for me and a few others I would guess.

For me personally I find that to be a odd departure with Korg and presumably either Korg canvassed the market place or it's user base to implement Kaoss on the Pa4x, Some might see it as a gimmick others who play EDM see it as a godsend. I would however be interested to see how popular you all think this feature is and how often you might use it ?

Just saying :?

I don't really see any use for it in what I do at the moment but never say never.

I think there are several ways to consider this feature:

1) A new instrument to be learned.

2) A new feature to be mastered, perhaps similar to fills, DNC and some of the more exotic TC Helicon presets.

3) Just for fun! It was a nice surprise to those of us that already owned their 4X.

Perhaps as we work with this feature and become more familiar with its capabilities and deficiencies we can provide some constructive feedback that will allow future improvements.

For example, arpeggios that stop at the end of a measure.

There are many features in the 4X that I don't use because I don't need them or they are beyond my abilities. However, I'm not about to ask they be dropped because I might want one of them some day as my knowledge and skills improve.

I Love it!

I think it appeals to a younger market; and I'm excited to see that.

I will use it to transition between songs. Rather than using the sometimes boring 3 endings of the styles, I will just use Variation #4 and KAOSSIFY the endings. That will give some really diverse and contemporary feeling to my mixes. And I'm not talking about Electronic music here, I'm talking about many other genre's

I absolutely applaud Korg for adding this to the Pa4x. It's bold, its courageous, and it's out of the box thinking.

Very wise words...

However up till now, i am with sidi, cant find much use for it at first glance, i like yamaha's live knobs feature, which has the same intentions as the Kaoss a much easier to understand feature..

This is an interesting subject... now clearly to those who are enjoying KAOSS this is a very good thing and why not and I'm sure this show boats some of the New processing power under the hood of the PA4X and again why not this is good ...But I can't help wondering why considering the very interesting discussions which we enjoy on this forum since the introduction of this very enjoyable PA4X keyboard that there may of been some other worthy area's which would of benefited also from some time and further development work as well as "KAOSS" to make this great keyboard even greater... for instance: just a small one here to consider which I have seen mentioned before...if we look at the home screen and press the Gray Volume Tab on the bottom of screen we see the bank of Volume Control Sliders at the bottom moving along to the right for "mic/in" "lower" "upper3" "upper2" "upper1" and over to the left of the screen we see "Dr/perc" "Accomp" "Bass" which are STILL ONLY play & mute controls which are still missing the much needed Volume Slider function for these specific areas on the home screen, so if you want the slider control in these areas of function then you still have to find this inbeded through various screens which you can find in (GLOBAL: Mode Preferences) then (Style 2) Not usefully for live and real time control... instead we get "KAOSS" but missed this much needed logical revised function that many have called for as rudimentary before the bells & whistles of "KAOSS".... which would appear to been given priority over the above needed revision (one I can think of for now) which for many working musicians is still very much needed as real time function on the home screen... so did the market place demand "KAOSS" in this instance?? or has the rumbles coming from the Yamaha stables aloud "KAOSS" to take priority given the time and fiscal requirements this development would have needed rather than the Important Unfinished Work which has been requested by the strong customer base the PA4X has enjoyed.... I wonder ? :)

kaoss was explored in the very first days of its appearance and I can just say the following :
It's a useful tool for performing effects like tempo divisions , filtering , muting and arpeggios for end users but it could be considered
as cool tool for advanced performers only if it was customizable since 'poor' presets do not fit to our demands , at least mine.

I would prefer instead discontinued functions like KBD set indivindual settings like "velocity to Fill" or that still lacking "assign OSC Amp
to Sliders 1-8" function due to create custom organs and synth engines in "Sliders Mode" that are missing from arrangers !

It's an interesting tool for just about anybody at any level really. It's something like the TC vocal section of the arranger. I don't sing and have never used it and probably never will. Many users do use it on regular basis. It's not a full blown TC unit but handy and useful for what it is. The same thing goes with Kaoss. It's an adaptation of the full blown version and yet it does offer very interesting effects. It's Korg's way of including EDM and Electronica users because till now you didn't really have much to work with for that type of music. It was mentioned already...it's a new instrument and you can't just throw your fingers at it and expect musical results. You actually have to spend time with it with an open mind unless you bought the Pa4x to play Fugue? Highly unlikely but if you did, you can just not worry about that little tab on the screen. It's really not getting in the way of anything. I'd say it's a wonderful addition and probably soon we'll see how people are incorporating it into their performance.

Nice transition Dnj...Goes to show KAOSS can be used with a wide variety of Styles. It's not just for hardcore Electronica fans. It's all about you using the tools and twisting and bending them to your advantage.
