Newbie to midi/module

Hi all. New to the forum and new to using modules, software and midi. I currently have a midi enabled keyboard. Here's my need/question:

First I found a great thread on here that addressed all the differences between the Korg keyboard products. I don't have it handy but I think it was older and from that article I decided that the korg-01w module would be the fit for my needs (basically a quality bundle of keyboards). From research I found the 01w is a bit outdated. QUESTION: still worth buying? Reliable? Expandable? Life span? Outdated sounds?

Another question: save $$ and uses software in lieu of hardware (module)?

So looking for input and recommendations. Not wanting to invest too much in to this as I may update/upgrade sooner than later.
