Is it possible...

Post by Jogger »

To somehow program the Kronos to get a George Shearing group sound?
By this, I mean to play solo piano chords with top note of chord also adding a single note guitar and single note vibes in Combi mode.
Or, I guess one could sample the sound but wonder if it could be programmed.
Sorry if this is a silly question, but that would be a cool sound to add doing solo gigs.

Thanks!

Can't say I've heard of the George Shearing group (?), but it should be fairly straightforward to do what you're describing on Kronos...

In the program basic page for the guitar or vibes sound you want, set the voice assign mode to mono, and the priority to high (so that if you play a chord, it only plays the highest note). Save this program to a new location, then if you layer it with a piano in a Combi, it will add the guitar or vibes sound only on the highest note of any chords you play.

Sorry, this is the arranging style I meant. I always thought it his signature sound.

And thanks for the info, I'll give it a try.

I'd do LH bass with maybe drums.

I would use the SEQ to duplicate the piece

What mikelees suggests is what I’d attempt. George Shearing used a lot of octaves as well in his chords. Adding them to the combi would be a must if you’re trying to get close to this sound.
You can also use the timbre switch’s to mute/unmute that “highest note” while playing for sound variety . I believe this can also be done with KARMA scenes but I don’t know how to do that.
George Shearing had a signature sound and was one of a kind. Would love to hear how it goes.

You are right, this is a jazz standard. There are several tutorials on YT that will get you up to speed on the song.

This IS his signature sound. The instrumentation he uses on many, many of his recordings are what defines that. So you were right in the first place. He played and used this instrumentation throughout most of his career. So, yes, you can recreate this sound on the KRONOS as it is just using a standard Quintet that involves Piano, Guitar, Bass, Drums, and Vibes. Creating his actual technique on the piano may be a bit harder as noted below. :)

He became known for a piano technique known as "The Shearing Sound", a type of double melody block chord, with an additional fifth part that doubles the melody an octave lower. With the piano playing these five voices, Shearing would double the top voice with the vibraphone and the bottom voice with the guitar to create his signature sound.
