Debut SoundCloud recordings (patch demos)

Post by psionic311 »

Hi everyone.

I've given a lot of advice over the years here.
Now I'm asking for a return favor.
Can you please criticize my first real audio upload?
I prefer honest feedback. Don't sugarcoat it.

Tonight, I actually recorded my noodling on the Kronos.
First time, ever.
This is a big, big deal for me. I never record.
It's only 4:17 long.

I don't have a DAW setup.
I basically plugged a USB cable into Kronos,
the other end into my desktop computer,
then used Audacity to record one take per patch/program.
I made six short patch demos, mostly made with the MOD7 engine.

Then I realized Windows can't play and record at the same time.
So I transferred my recordings to my laptop via USB stick.
I played these back via WinAmp on the laptop, recording on my desktop,
using a 1/8" to stereo 1/4" cable into my XR18, which is my soundcard.
I recorded the six individual 30-60+ second tracks into Audacity as a single take.

https://soundcloud.com/andrewshaw-1/kronos-patch-demo1

Any and all advice / criticism welcome.
I believe constructive feedback makes one better.

It's called Kronos patch Demo1.
Here are the 6 patches in it:

Kronos 303 demo 0:44
AL1 tb303 acid ditty 1:04
7 interruptus 0:37
7 nexus folding 1:08
7 flummoxed 0:31
AL1 pacboy 0:25

The track sounds nice and meaty in WinAmp.
But thru soundcloud it's kinda distant and boxy, but with bottom.

Thanks.

There seems to be an issue with Soundcloud. I've checked some tracks I've listened to before, and those don't play, either.

Nice track. Can you elaborate how you did your noodling?

The first part is exactly the same sequence I posted some days ago in a thread about 303 sounds on the kronos

Thanks, I followed your guide and made a patch out of it. Did slight adjustments; didn't use MFX/TFX and a Stereo BPM delay instead. Moreover I added Joystick -Y as a AMS for the filter frequency to play around a bit.
Here's a short demo (MP3, 1MB):

Yes, good. Sounds good. Good groove at 0:42 (you should exploit it further)
And this sound, at 2:18 : love it !
I begin to understand why you like Hydrasynth so much. There are some sounds you did which are not so far from some Hydrasynth' demo !

Oh, that's where that came from. Yikes, sorry!

I'll remove it.
It sounds much nicer... smoother, than my tracks.
It's also named differently than my patches.

As for noodling...
I figured just playing a patch would be boring.
So for each one, I spent a few minutes planning,
a musical motif, maybe KARMA,
and some tweaking of control surface knobs,
most of them I fade out using the Master slider.

After I rehearsed it all, then I recorded into Audacity.
I think I downloaded your 303 to listen to it last week.
That's how it got mixed up in my audio dittys.

How are the volume level, bass, overall EQ / production on them?
Are they too quiet or loud, or are they too boomy or shrill?

Thanks for the encouragement.
My first goal is to capture all these patches I've been creating.
Secondary goal is to get into the habit of just recording.
Eventually I'll move either to Kronos sequencer or Logic Pro for full songs.

Originally, my link had something like soundcloud.com/you/tracks

After liviou reported he couldn't hear it,
I changed the link to what it is now.
I got it using their Share link,
instead of the link you get by navigating your profile to Tracks.

Don't know if any of that helps.

I think the recording quality is good on SC.

SC is better quality playback vs YouTube, which sounds compressed to me, esp
if the songs are multi tracked.

If you continue recording on SC, its better to adapt your mixing style to that or any digital music site. For each originals, I spend several hours spread over a few days to improve my multi track mixes.

Of course, if a person is playing 1 or 2 instruments, mixing is easy. when recording up to 16 tracks, its more work to get it right.

Mixing is more art than science. Just my advice

Yes its Ok for me. Bass are strong but its good for that style.
That's a step I didn't do yet : recording. I spend my music time in improvisations or sounds testing but Im' a bit lazy for multitracks recording.

if you can manage the SEQ, get comfortable with the work flow, you can get professional level results.

I took down the original recording.
I accidentally mixed in SKung's 303 demo
It's back up now, without the mixup.

Here are the patch names:

AL1 tb303 acid ditty
7 interruptus
7 nexus folding
7 flummoxed
AL1 pacboy
