Why do you play keys, day after day, for years, for decades?

Post by GregC »

I have a short answer. my #1 reason.

Can you settle on 1 reason to persist, year after year, decade after decade ?

If you have a list of reasons, that will work, too :D

I can see that. How about evolving creative musician ?

By saying ' who ' a person is explains 'why' a person plays keys over time

Because music is in my soul. I love to play when I’m glad, sad, mad, or feeling any other emotion - it is deep therapy for me.

Plus, I like to play for others.

For me, I think about how far I’ve come since the early days. Set your sites on something that is out of your comfort zone. Working hard to achieved and learning that song that you thought was out of your reach. For me that’s the big payoff. Then you set the bar higher and work on another challenge. A guitar player, and former band mate, said “whoever practices the most wins”. So true.

totally agree. Playing, actually[ for me] creating is cathartic.

I reflect back what goes on around us. I record that expression , title it, and develop it later. I often decide to counter the expression and take it in another direction.

I like that. It reminds me of goal orientation and achievement. IMO, a large part of learning a song, something complex is ' finishing '.

when we complete a song, and have a good feeling, thats dopamine production.
Its a powerful internal chemical and makes the brain happy.

Because it is a calling

The piano/keyboard insists that I play, and without playing I am incomplete and have that constant nagging that I need to be playing.

For me it is therapy and most importantly something you never finish.
Art (or most things you can make) is great until it’s done then it’s a burden you have to look at and live with. For those that are famous: I often think I’m very glad I don’t have an audience that expects me to play my hits from 40 years ago!! I can be what I am now.

Live music is always in the moment. It is always creative. You can play a piece 1000 times and every time it is different (which is great unless you have an audience who’s expectations are fixed!!). Then the challenge is to do it as exactly as you can. Which also love!

With the keys to the door you can go out and share those moments with others, be part of something bigger. Be humbled and happy.

Playing piano is like being able to fly.

worry about being famous and playing originals from the 70's ?

And an audience that follows me for 40 years ?

I can only dream of that ! LOL

I like that. I think it reflects on the depth of the human experience on our fragile planet.
