Copy .PCG floppy disks for X2 and T3 on PC Win 98

I want to copy and back up my original KORG disks for my T3 and my X2 with .PCG files on them.

I want the files saved on my PC hard drive as further back up.

I bought a vintage Win 98 PC with a floppy drive just for that purpose.

I planned to copy the 1.4MB first, then install a 720k floppy drive and copy them.

However, when I insert the disks, my PC can not see the files to copy them.

I have tested the disks in my T3 and they work just fine.

What can I do to allow my old PC to see and mange the .PCG files??

It might be that the floppy drive is faulty. The read/write heads could be in need of head cleaning. Before doing this, go into Windows Explorer and, under Tools | Folder Options | View, make sure the "Show hidden files and folders option" is checked, and uncheck the "Hide extensions for known file types", and the "Hide Protected Operating system files" options.

It's also worth getting a USB to floppy disk drive as a backup means of accessing floppy disks. These drives are not hugely expensive.

No Luck. My old PC keeps wanting to format the floppy it can not see the propritery files on the disks I guess.

Hi Markus,

I guess this does not solve your problem, but according to p.175 of the Korg X2 manual: "The X2/X3 disk format is the same as that used on MS-DOS 720KB disks".

So it doesn't sound like there's any proprietary format, your PC should be able to read those disks, if the drive is OK and working.

In my experience, getting old floppy disks to read can be fiddly. I've had disks that fail to read in one floppy drive, but are fine to read in another drive. I'd try another floppy drive if you can find one.

I did find a solution for just the KORG X2.

A SONY floppy drive that is both 720K and 1.4MB capable and the command in MSDOS of format a:/f:720 allowed me to format the 720K disks and also pull the files from the old disks.
