Returning to Kronos and a few questions!

Post by travr »

A few years back, I had a Kronos 2 88 key that I bought brand new, but decided to sell due to a cross country move for work. I have always missed it dearly and thought about getting another, but just never did. Fast forward to this weekend...I was browsing Guitar Center's used section (dangerous activity) and found what looked like a really nice condition Gen 1 Kronos 2011 88 key for a great price. I called the store and the kid there said it was in like new condition, so onto my GearCard it went. It is supposed to arrive Friday at my local store for pickup. It is almost like Christmas in June :)

I know functionally it is the same as my old Kronos2, but I'll probably need to upgrade the RAM and SSD to bring it up to modern standards right? I still have my registration keys for my old sound libraries on the KORG site, they should work with this new-to-me Kronos or are they tied somehow to my old Kronos?

Anyhow, just wanted to finally get on the forum, say hello and get back up to speed!

Hello, happy for you for this coming back to Kronos.

Unfortunaltely, your ID code for shop Korg depends on hardware, so, it can't be transposed from your old K2 to your new Kronos. You will have to buy the sounds libraries again.
As regards the memory, you should ask to your seler if your Kronos 1 has been upgraded to 3go.

Awww, bummer. Man that sucks, I had a decent number of sounds. Thank you for the information though; always better to know than not! :)

Actually, I've seen quite the opposite with the years with many Kronos owners switching to a new unit and transferring add-on/bought library IDs from their sold unit to the newly bought one. You will have to contact Korg directly and they should grant you permission with new IDs to enter on your new Kronos.

Thank you, so there is a ray of hope! I will reach out to Korg and see if they are willing to help once it arrives and it checks out hopefully!

Good news! Taking a shot in the dark, I redownloaded the Berlin Grand EX-17 that was in my account from when I bought my old Kronos 2 and installed it on my new-to-me 2011 Kronos 88. It installed without a hitch and said it was "authorized" with no further action needed from me.

It came with 3GB installed, so that is great, but it only has the original SSD in so of course, I am already almost out of storage. I have a Kingston 120GB SSD ready to go in as a secondary SSD, but I'm still waiting on the long SATA cable to arrive from Amazon.

Once I get that done, I will go ahead and try installing the rest of my libraries onto the 2nd SSD.

Hi there,

Glad everything works. The second SSD installation is rather easy, especially on an earlier Kronos as it doesn't have the additional protection metal plates inside.

Yes indeed, it wasn't bad all! It took me about an hour to get it all done and formatted. Now I have an extra 110GB or so free! I'm glad to be back with a Kronos 88! :)
