Using Kronos 2 system in Kronos 1 or X

Post by Drummond »

Has anyone tried installing Kronos 2 system/firmware into a Kronos 1 or X? Or using the motherboard from a Kronos 2 in the earlier models?

You can easily update an older Kronos model to a Kronos 2 in terms of OS and sounds.

Sure, thanks, but that is not the question here.

If the question refers to the sub system firmware, then no, the Kronos/Kronos X and Kronos 2 sub systems differ sufficiently for the firmware not to be compatible. The sub system firmware loader will not load onto incompatible hardware if you try to do so.

It is hard to find replacement motherboards.
It would be nice to get the Kronos 2 extra sounds without paying a premium price.

The sub-system firmware has nothing to do with replacement of the motherboard or obtaining extra sounds. It’s just for the dedicated ARM CPU that drives the MIDI ports, LCD, audio interface and control surface. They’re different between the Kronos 1 and 2, so not interchangeable.

The OS and sounds are interchangeable between the 1 and 2. You can buy the Berlin grand for the Kronos 1, as well as the extra sounds. (Exs18). If you just want the Exi based sounds, maybe someone could send you the PCG with the new sounds ;)
