Using the PA5X with Baum Software Songbook+

Post by SussexDave »

I’ve only had my Korg for 3 days so please bear with me.
Setup guidance for Songbook+ refers to earlier versions of the keyboard. I have checked that Songbook+ on my iPad sees midi via the USB link and set up midi channel 16 input and output on the keyboard to control but have been unable to find preferences in the style setup.
Anyone cracked this yet?

Hi Dave, I have songbook+ , but only had it for a short time, so haven’t even tried setting it up with my PA5x,, still trying to get some music loaded.
Are you using it with styles? If you are, midi channel 16 might be a problem , channel 9 to 16 is are used for style tracks. If I get a chance I’ll have a look and see if I can make any sense of it.

Hi Dave,
Had a quick look, my friend I think was using it with his Yamaha which has registrations/ styles, that’s how I was planning on using it with my sx900. Gather you might be using it for midi files, so forget what I said about channel 16.

I don't have a Pa5X, but do have extensive experience using Songbook+ with the Pa4X. Your comment about Styles confuses me. Perhaps these notes will help, and take the time to read slowly and not confuse references to the Songbook+ app with the inbuilt Korg songbook.

The best way to use Songbook+ is to leverage off the Korg Songbook.

TEST:

1) Assign a song number to a Korg Songbook entry (eg 0044)

2) For this test, just use any PDF as a song in Songbook+ It could even be a blank PDF, it does not matter. Using 'Edit Song' in Songbook+ assign a Korg song code to the PDF which has the same numerical value as that which you assigned in (1)

3) Select some other song in the Korg songbook , and navigate to any other song in Songbook+ to start from a mismatched position

4) Now select the PDF in the Songbook+ app from Step (2)

5) If everything is working correctly, the Pa5X will automatically reset to the Korg song from Step (1)

---------------------

You need to adjust your way of working, that everything revolves around the Korg songbook (as Karmanthanever often says).

So you set up a song on your Pa5X how you want it, style or song mode, Kbd Set, volume levels etc. Save as a song in the Korg Songbook.

Using Songbook+ as your primary setlist manager, select a song in Songbook+ and all the Pa5x settings are instantly retrieved.

You can also create 'Action Buttons' in the Songbook+ app for quick change of variation, breaks, volume levels, page turns and even jump to another song . The Korg Pa4X manual shows the program/control messages (which can be put into a Songbook+ action button).

It may be the Pa5X offers even more control/program messages, but I haven't looked at that.

Hope this helps with what you are trying to do.

Hi Pa4x user,
Thank you so much. Only reason I mentioned styles is the guy who was going to help me set mine up with my sx900 (eventually ) knows I don’t use midi files or MP3’s , so figured it must be something to do with styles. In actual fact , I found out now it’s to do with Yamaha registrations .

So in Korg you’re saying you use songbook. Great. I did find a utube clip on it, BUT, it’s in German!!. Haha. With the pictures on his utube clip and your instructions, should hopefully get it work provided there’s not some sort of PA5x bug .

Get mine set up too earlier than I planned. Should also help get my sx900 set up.

Thank you so much. You’ve helped 2 of us.
best wishes

Hi PA4xuser, I’m up and running on my PA5x. Between the utube clip and yourself, had it up and running on my PA5x in no time.
Just the basic setting at the moment, I’ll check the rest of what you wrote about later.
Thanks again.

Hi Dave,
I followed PA4xuser instructions
Plus this utube clip, unfortunately in German, but even so, some of the pics helped.
It’s not based on PA5x, but settings are the same, Midi, you’ll find via settings button. And you Use the Tablet setting which gives you midi channel 16 on both in and out. Only thing I had to do was tick the “ clock send” and save it.

I had to watch it a couple of times to see what the guy was doing, ( plus I can understand a bit of German which helped).

Good luck, at least we know it does work, haven’t set up a pedal yet, unfortunately mine is connected to my sx900 so have to get another one.

If you turn on subtitles on the video, they're in English.

Hi Chris,
really, didn’t realise one can do that. Might sound odd in this day and age but, I’m not all that familiar with how utube works, only watch the odd clip here and there.

Great to know because the guy has a series of of these utube clips on songbook+, easier than learning about it from the manual. There seems to be so many great functions, I’m only at the stage of putting my sheet music in.

Thank you

The bad thing is that Songbook of Korg Pa5X cannot be used with thi Os (1.1.0) because the styles saved in Songbook don't recall different instruments on tracks when changing variations.

Hi, sorry I’m a bit confused are you referring to melody tracks or style tracks? If it’s style tracks why wouldn’t you just alter instruments and create user style?

Hi! I'm talking about style tracks. For you to understand, do these steps:
1. Press BOOK and select Oryantal song. Press Exit
2. Play Variation 1 and while playing, reselect Oryantal Style from touchscreen. You'll see what I mean.
You can have a Style where every variation has different instruments on same Style track, it happens in Factory Styles also, but not when in Songbook. Big problem.
