Changing Performance Roland Fantom XR..NOW SORTED!!!!

Post by alanjpearson »

Further to my piggybacking on another thread, I think this deserves a separate one!

I have a Kronos 73 which I want use in Setlist mode to select "Performances" (I believe this might be "Song" in Korg-speak) on my Fantom XR Rack.

I have set the Fantom to receive Patch (Program in Korg-speak) data on MIDI Ch3 and Performance data on MIDI CH16.

The Kronos Global MIDI channel is set to 16.
I have set up a dummy Combi set to EXT2 with the Bank MSB at 85 and the LSB at 01 and MIDI channel 3.

Only the Patch/Program changes on the XR, the Performance does not change.

Any ideas?

1) first off all you have to make sure you are sending the correct lsb/msb numbers to change a PERFORMANCE and not just the PATCH within the performance.

2) you have to send this message on whatever midi channel your FANTOM is set up to receive performance patch changes on. (I think it's called performance control channel) check your midi settings menu.

Mentioned above - done that, MSB 85 LSB 00-127 being sent on MIDI CH16

i think your problem may be your lsb number (based on what you typed).... the 000-127 would be the actual program change (which performance to select) your lsb number should be a 2 digit number just like the msb number.

Sorry - typo.

I've set MSB to 85 LSB to 00 for the User bank in the XR. You should then be able to select 1-64 of the performances.

What I did do was set the Kronos MIDI channel to 3 and it now selects the first Roland performance - haven't got to the next step of selecting Perfomance 2 yet........

The MIDI implementation here just does not work IMHO.

I have set up my Kronos with a Combi which should select the User Performance Bank through EXT MSB 85 and LSB 00, with a Program number 00 - 64
The basic channel is set to 16 on the Kronos and Performance Control Channel is 16 on the XR. It does not change the Performance Bank on the XR.

The Fantom only responds to rotating the dial on the Kronos - which is sending Program Change messages - then it steps through the Performance Changes in Sequence.
And to boot, the XR Programs play first time but then indicate they have been modified by the MIDI messages they receiver and stop playing!

Am I doing something wrong?

SORTED!

First of all. to get Combis to send the correct Bank and Program Select, you need to set the Performance Control Channel to the Combi Timbre which contains your EXT Bank Program Select message.

You should NOT set the Kronos Global Channel to the same channel as the Performance Control Channel of the XR.

The Kronos appears to send a number of messages to the XR which mutes the XR output - you need to go into MIDI filter pages for the Combi Timbre and ONLY select Program Change/Other Control Change Message and the pedals/foot controls you are using.

Phew! That took some really boring trial and error!

The boring trial/error is the mother of all inventions.

Alan J thanks for posting this thread, I was having the exact same problem and could not understand why selecting the Roland performance on my Kronos would result in the fantom XR being muted. I had noticed if I manually changed the program in the combi so the program change for the fantom on channel 16 it would unmute the XR. but who has time for that between songs.

Your approach of using the midi filter was spot on, it means the XR does not go silent with each performance change.
Just play it

Korg forever
