Future of the Nautilus.

Post by dexman »

With the return of the Kronos, has Korg dropped any hints about the future of the Nautilus? Last year, I purchased a Nautilus AT for my church and enjoy working with it. When Korg officially announced the Kronos's return, I started to wonder if the company is going to discontinue the Nautilus. :-k

Yeah it's going to be discontinued. Just to put things in perspective, the Kronos was an anomaly in that, it was produced in now 4 different iterations over the last 14 years. It's the only Workstation model that has been reocurring. Everything else has at some point been discontinued. Korg will probably release a few more OS patches, even after a few years, but hopefully, your Nautilus will last many, many years. Anyway, it will continue to get new EXs libraries for years to come. It's likely that anything released for the Kronos will be compatible with the Nautilus going forward. My 01/W is now 34 years old and still plays great... it was discontinued in 1993, when the Korg X3 came out.

Don't worry, Nautilus is not a Kronos. Is deeply related but different so will be available in parallel long time from now.

Yeah, I think current plans would be to keep both. They're at different price points, and Nautilus also appeals to people who like the sounds but find the Kronos control surface overwhelming. Plus Nautilus gives you the much lighter weight 73 for those who prefer a non-hammer version. (Of course, eventually, everything gets discontinued!)

Nautilus is an instrument in which a lot of work has been invested and those involved have put in all their effort, dedication and knowledge for a fresh sound and a palette of new samplers that cannot be found in other instruments. Those who already have it can find it in presets, Drum Kits from Mini Pops, Univox, Rockmate, special ethnic instruments, original patterns from drum machines carefully reproduced exactly like the originals. Also special effects in categories of cinematic, nature, signals, TV and many others. All these development costs are compensated in time.

Thank you, everyone! I understand that the Nautilus is a "love it or hate it" keyboard, so, different people will have different thoughts. I do like the minimalist look to the Naut. As someone who owns some vintage 1990's HiFi equipment, I'm all too familiar with the cracks & pops that can be heard when turning knobs & adjusting sliders. :(

No, Nautilus is not the Krome replacement. Nautilus is a same category as Kronos. Krome EX is still available, Kross 2 and Krome EX will not be discontinued yet.

This is what is said on one of the Kronos 3 videos at NAMM. They are withdrawing the Krome and maintaining the Nautilus as the mid range board.

Hope they continue to support/update the Nautilus for at least a couple years. Wonder if the grey version is going to continue or was just temporary. Does anyone know on the newer grey Nautilus what the finish is like? Korg just refers to it as a matte grey, but I'm wondering if it's durable. Is it a powder-coated finish that will last?

Korg has indicated that the Nautilus is staying around. It will be replacing the Krome in the product lineup. Descriptions of the gray colored unit indicate that it is a limited edition. The color reminds me of the Triton Pro.🙂
