Korg M1 repair- power supply wrong connector

Post by tedsorvino »

Hi everyone. I guess some of you are familiar with M1 repairs so may be able to direct me a bit after a mistake i’ve made.
I’m in the middle of repairing an old M1.
The synth was powering up normally, screen good, really bad sound on the headphone and bad volume fader.
Took the boards out. Replaced the headphone out ic and fader pot. I know that it can also be bad dac or bad memory chips (has happened to me in other digital gear repair), but i take it slowly.

But…while i was taking things back, instead of connecting the digital rail supply (5v) on connector 9A, i connected it on connector 7A. Stupid , stupid, stupid.
And i connected the cable that should go on connector 7A (this is connected on the +12v, -12v rail via pcb 1261, unfortunatelly) on connector 9A.
The result was a small spark and a blown fuse (2A-250v).
But when i replaced a couple of fuses (1A-250V dead immediately connected to the circuit correctly, and then tried with a 2.5 A - 250V disconnected from the mainboard, nearly saw fire on one of the power resistors) I realized that there were some 3-4 resistors (small and larger) burned on the power supply unit. Hopefully the problem will be restricted before the main board, just on the 5v rail of the power supply. I wish.
Haven’t tested yet. Just took the power supply board out.

Am i correct on my assumption that the 7b connector - the one that should go on 7a (aftertouch)- cannot harm the 9a connections since on its own it hasn’t got any power,
but the 9b - the 5v power supply connector- carries 5v on pins 1+2 and by going on connector 7a these two 5v pins clash with 12 and -12v coming from pcb 1261 via connector 19a.
So there is havoc on the power supply (hopefully not on the 1261 board which is depended of the 7a rails - is there any protection?)
What do you think of my assumption?
Am i in danger of having damaged any mainboard or dac (1266, 1261) ics or other components?
What components on the power supply are the most prone to damage by short?

Thanks in advance.
