Korg PA5X similar to Korg OASYS

Post by JagiChan »

The PA5X is nothing new except a rehashed version of the once famous Korg OASYS (2005). Unfortunately it was so darn expensive that Korg did not make great sales and eventually shut down it's production. Maybe Korg should consider putting some of the great features from the OASYS into PA5X. Then we would have a awesome "Arranger Workstation".

However, the Pa5x is derived from MANY of Korgs keyboards as so many other Korg keyboards are. Everyone knows the Kronos was a derivative of the Oasys. There are Triton sounds, M1 Sounds, and on and on.

From Korg directly;

"The curated selection of acoustic and electric pianos, which includes sounds from our celebrated SV-2 Stage Vintage Piano, is particularly suitable for the hammer action 88 key version. We also included specially selected sounds from our flagship synth workstations: Kronos and Nautilus.

A new Drawbar Organ section proudly boasts a realistic control surface that can rely on the physical sliders and buttons on the main panel of Pa5X. New effects that are derived from the legendary KORG CX-3 Combo Organ are also included. "

Like what? Karma? there is KAOS, Oasys didn't sell cause it cost too much, PA5X is much more advanced then the OASYS , the joystick sucked and I can go on and on, now let's concentrate on learning the PA5x which will take a long time to learn because it's a beast!

There are some similar functions but then generational structure is a natural progression. I have both instruments but the 5X is now the "go to" instrument of choice. Still love them both! :D

Completely irrelevant comparison in any software aspect !
The only common engine of Oasys/Kronos and Pa5X is HD1 sampler sound engine , but Pa5X sampler is far advanced
than any hardware sampler on the market , while Kronos Sound interface still belongs to 2000 Triton age !
Kronos 2/3 SGX-2 & EP-1 are also samples based engines and obviously belongs to main HD1 architecture.

Hope this helps

One would expect this in the real Kronos successor (not the "3" from January), right?

I am usually not in the PA forum, never even been near to a PA, but somehow this conversation caught my attention 8) .
Kronos 2-88 & X73, Kurzweil MicroPiano, Spitfire Albion V Tundra, BBCO Core, Nylon Guitar Ilya Efimov, Xtant Audio Uilleann Pipes - in use

Testing Modartt Pianoteq..

Korg DS-8, Roland D-10, M1Rex, Wavestation, Korg SP-280, JV2080, Wavestate, Kronos LS - all RIP

Sure , this was expected since Oasys birth not now , PaSeries sampling engine was always superior from Korg workstations
absolute weird thing that I have never understood the reason that an arranger of same brand is far advanced in sampling engine.

Korg Pa5X & Yamaha Genos 2 are the most advanced sampler engines and the only with VST features like multi legato
detection and round robin in main sound interface , but Genos 2 is behind and do not provide access of those features
to users since are strictly used for factory sounds.

This is the reason that WavesArt has created the most advanced sound libraries for Pa5X arranger that retain the VST
features and all instruments articulations , that turn this arranger to a power workstation among arranger's abilities
when Pa5X increased Ram to 8 Gb in order to host grand pianos and Symphonic Orchestras !

Hope this helps

Great info, thanks. I was looking at it from a HW perspective and I did not see much of a difference like the OASYS had the tilting screen, drawbars etc., in fact the OASYS had even LEDs for the various sliders similar to Yamaha Genos. So I was wondering why did they remove those LEDs and other goodies. Maybe it was for optimizing the look and feel of a pro instrument. Anyway, thanks for the SW perspective, but the OASYS was using the Linux OS which is equally powerful as the current OS (dont know which OS is being employed in the PA5X).

Because Kronos 3 would cost 8000 $ , crystal clear , Oasys was a fantastic & expensive hardware construction !
Bear in mind that Pa5X is an arranger and led indexers are required for leading users fingers to perform with fast
response to the rhythm elements , while a workstation has always a more limited real time control in real time
performance compared to one man band.

Pa5X uses also Linux mod OS but works as an app since it uses an equally fast ARM processor and is twice faster than
Kronos 3 considering that it loads OS & 4 Gb of Ram samples in almost the same time when Kronos 3 loads only 2 Gb.
