KRONOS RAM UPGRADE 2Go to 4 Go

Thanks for all the info in this thread.

I upgraded my synth to 4GB this afternoon. Relatively painless. Only hassle was getting the bottom board in place and lining all the holes up correctly.

Tip for anyone else doing this, try to get the two screws under the sticker in place first as those go right to the fan chassis which can move up or down a bit when the board is on and make you have to unscrew everything and start all over again. Once those screws are in just move the board around until you have all holes lined up perfectly (hand thread everything first then tighten down later).

Was a little worried about the heat spreaders as space looked tight between the dimm slots and I wasn't sure how thick they were but turned out to be a non-issue. Make sure you don't get ram with metal heat sinks on them.

They are available for sale, free shipping, for $22.00

I just purchased one strip. Worked for me!

Whatcha gonna do if v1.0.5 of the Kronos OS checks to see if you've added unapproved memory? Hmmmmm Just thinking out loud

The only reason why korg may do such a thing if it would be proven that that kind of memory would harm the safety of the motherboard.

where did you get it? ebay is the only place I found them that cheap and they were used.

Regarding violating the warranty, people just need to use common sense.

The warranty only comes into play if something is broken or defective. Then the question is what caused the defect or breakage?

Just opening up your keyboard should not in itself violate the warranty. However, if your actions break something, then of course the warranty would be invalid, for that repair.

The warranty is also not an "all nor nothing" item. For example, if you break a keyboard key and some internal part fails around the same time, the repair of the internal part may be covered by your warranty if it is unrelated to the keyboard key break.

The bottom line is any manufacturer like Korg does not want to pay for damge caused by the user.

Unless you really feel you need the extra memory now, I would wait until (1) Korg updates the OS to fully support the extra memory or (2) your warranty period expires.

2. 3 Years (Just in time for Kronos 2 with 8Gb RAM)

The Kronos has 1000's of quality sounds. and quite a few parameters to work with to customize factory programs.

I don't recall seeing any 4 gig posters discussing the experience of loading extra ( and large) samples, manipulating them, combining them with factory sounds for a unique music experience.

So far, some of the 4 gig folks are happy to see the ram counter and talk about the install experience. Perhaps folks are enthusiastic about being early adopters of their 4 gig.

I am only interested in a practical application and useage of the 4 gig. So far, its a low priority for me.

I've personally not discussed loading extra samples etc, because I'm busy sorting out my own sample library, porting it from the X6 to the Kronos, and the 140Mb or so thats left after all the EXs have loaded just doesn't cut it. I will eventually get round to "manipulating them, combining them with factory sounds for a unique music experience" once I've sorted out my immediate needs, and I certainly look forward to it.

Yes, I could have off loaded all the extra samples that Korg have kindly furnished us with, but that would have messed up all the lovely factory Programs/Combis, which I certainly don't want to do at the moment. In fact, I would have preferred Korg NOT to have given us the extras and filling up all the User Banks, as it's now a bit like taking sweets from a baby.

So, for me, the extra RAM is a necessity, not for bragging rights.

I'm just explaining my personal reasons for risking the upgrade, and certainly no offence is intended - Now I need a cup of tea.

It is a violation of the warranty. Whether Korg can tell it's been opened by the user is a different story, though.

This also crossed my mind, but I seriously doubt if Korg's attitude to OS updates is the same as Apple's (I'm talking iOS updates that break Jailbreak here). But I guess it is a possibility.

Why should Korg???

If musicians are making the best of the Kronos and spread the news that it even can be a powerful sampling device, with space for all factory sound PLUS some serious sampling, this HELPS Korg a lot without causing any trouble.

I rather think that they are willing to enforce this development by all means in future updates, in their own well understood interest! it is a BIG plus in the present workstation and performance synth

market.

What is your source for that? Unless opening something breaks a seal that says "warranty void if broken," I'm not aware of any situation where merely opening something voids its warranty.
