I want to buy a 61 myself and I heard most people were (are) satisfied. I tried a 73 in the store and it also was fine but I'm not a piano player so I would go for a 61.

Whether one likes a keyboard action or not is subjective, especially when it comes to semi-weighted/unweighted synth style keys. At least with a weighted keyboard you have the tradition piano action with which you can compare. But what is the standard for synth actions? There is none.
The consensus I've seen is that the Korg semi-weighted action is as good as anything out there.

For me, the keyboard action for synth that set the standard is the Yamaha DX7. That action has stood the test of time and just happens to be very good feeling.
The Kronos is the first one that I think is better than it.

There's a lot of synth actions I've not been keen on, and for me the best I can recall was on the Roland D50, which was very smooth and I've often regretted getting rid of it. I quite like the feel of the V - Synth GT I got recently, but I've always been happier with a decent weighted action even though it makes some techniques a little harder to play.

I agree, the DX7 did set the standard. I think Kawai surpassed that standard in the K5000s (which sits right beside the DX7 in my studio). Both of those instruments are built like bunkers, which might contribute something to the overall feel that we players seem to like.aron wrote:For me, the keyboard action for synth that set the standard is the Yamaha DX7. It's a bummer that the DX7 won't transmit velocities over 100 in controller duties.
I'm amazed anyone would hate the keys on the Kronos 61. Same keys as on my M3-73 and I love 'em.

For me that is precisely the problem, i've tried the m3 some time ago and thought the keys where a piece of cheap crap. Does not remotely compare to yamaha's fs action keybeds, from old yamaha's and korg's. Maybe some people likes the m3/kronos 61 keys because they are not as stiff on the bottom when pressed as the old ones, but for me that's one of the reason i like the fs action as i play more piano/EP/Pads on those keys than pure synth sounds. Maby for organ the m3/kronos keybed is better. When i get mine i'll probably go with the 61 and play it with my motif xs8 keys for pianos, or with my 01/w's keys for synth action.
+1. M361 and Kronos61 share the same keybed. Both are outstanding. But I think this is like discussing the 'feel" of a guitar. No two of us have the same size hands or the same feel or touch....so nothing is right or wrong when it comes to choosing a preferred instrument to be played.McHale wrote:I'm amazed anyone would hate the keys on the Kronos 61. At least with a keyboard....if you like the sound or features of the instrument, you can still play it with your preferred midi controller. No such luck on a guitar!

I agree that the 61 feels great
I own ( but am returning) a 73K
Very un natural bounce that causes a trigger and makes the notes sound staccato when playing fast runs. Unacceptable.
If you're trying to play jazz or anything that requires nuance... Forget it.
With sus pedal it's gorgeous. Best piano on a workstation ever.
But like i said, quick soft runs without pedal come off very choppy.
And I know its not my technique. I've played many other weighted keys, and it's nice and smooth.
Shame, cause I would love to keep theK 73. Oh well. Maybe future upgrades will help that.

I find the keys on the K61 to be very smooth and silky. A real joy to play. Beats the pants off my Yamaha arranger which, factoring in inflation, cost about the same as the Kronos. The Kronos keys appear to be properly hinged whereas the Yamaha keys are fixed at one end and rely on the spring in the plastic!! Dreadful

We're all going to have different opinions. Let's just enjoy making music and not worry about the small details.

I also like my 61 key action (except for one key which behaves not good but will be fixed eventually).
It's the first time I really can use aftertouch and the keybed itself is better than my M50.

Rubbish? You may not like them NAJ, but rubbish?NAJ wrote:I have always used semi-weighted keys and I am used to the semi-weighted keys on the Korg pro arrangers they feel very good when playing. To NAJ - I've played the 61 quite a few times at my local retailer, brought many 61-key-playing friends in with me (I almost always use weighted), and have read these boards for quite some time...yours is the first complaint I've seen regarding the 61 key?
NOt to YOUR liking maybe. Certainly not rubbish.
I nearly went for the 61 because I really liked the 61. I nearly regretted getting the 73 because of the 'new action'. Two weeks later I am used to it and I love it. I hope I can eventually buy a controller semi weighted keyboard that has the 61's action.
