Broken R3 USB port... Editor won't recognize MIDI to USB?

Post by tehblasian »

Hi! I'd really appreciate any help I can get. Long story short, I the usb port on my R3 broke and I can't fix it.

I bought a midi to usb cable hoping that I'd be able to edit my programs that way. However, the editor isn't recognizing my R3, although i can use it as a controller just fine in Ableton.

If anyone could help get this sorted out so that I can edit and transfer programs once again, that would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

How do you mean, broke? Has the connector been snagged and broken by harsh treatment? Are you connecting to Ableton via MIDI?

Hi,

Did you choose the midi-usb cable in the editor as ports to connect to?

Also make sure you have a decent usb-midi cable. The cheaper ones only support short MIDI messages (4 bytes), which is fine for playing and performing, but not for the longer SysEx MIDI messages. And that is exactly the type of messages the editor relies on to communicate with the board... So with such a cheap cable, it look like it is fine (because e.g. you can send notes to ableton) but on the other hand the editor does not work...

Good luck

The iack broke off the pcb board. Right now I'm connecting to Ableton via a MIDI to USB cable.

I'm using a cheap cable so that might be the problem... Thanks for the information and hopefully a good quality cable will fix the problem. In theory I should be able to use the editor with midi, according to the user manual...

Some of the USB to MIDI converters are not capable of transferring data reliably, although I've found the Korg Kontrol49 to be usable as a good quality USB to MIDI converter.

The USB socket is probably repairable using a new socket and some eopxy or, better still, some two part methacrylate adhesive (e.g. Devweld 531), to retain the socket on the PCB after re-soldering the PCB tracks to the socket, using wire if need be.
