Own both the Electribe Sampler and Volca Sample?

Post by apapdop »

Pretty smitten with my Volca Keys and i've some cash earmarked for the Volca FM. But the gearlust junky in me keeps whispering "howabout them Volca Sample thingys?"

I'm more than happy with my Electribe Sampler, but to anybody who owns both the Electribe Sampler and the Volca Sample... Does the Volca Sample bring anything new to the table that the Electribe Sampler can't do?

Many thanks...

The Volca Sample has tons of character and its workflow will generate radically different results than what you get from the Electribe Sampler. You will not regret it if you get it. It's a box of magic.

The Volca Sample workflow is so fast and simple that I never touch my Electribe. Buy the Volca Sample and download Vosyr http://www.frederikson-labs.com/. It lets you manage your samples in a very efficient way.

I have a bunch of demos /w sample packs for vosyr here: https://www.youtube.com/user/TripResort/videos

+1. Well worth every penny. So fun to work with and the results are always surprisingly stellar. The one-bar pattern length seems like a huge setback, but really this was never meant to be a stand-alone machine, but an instant techno drum/perc box. For that task it excels fluently. After one day I knew it was going to be amazing, so I dumped the factory set and filled it with cliqs and bleeps and analog bass drums and well.. a comprehensive minimal/psytrance kit. The ability to mute/unmute tracks easily and record motion-sequences on the fly, alter start and loop points to the extent that they self-oscillate and swell the plastic reverb, this is all cool and extends the life of these one-bar sequences into providing texture for ten-minute movements. What really sets it off, though, is the "analog isolator" or whatever it's called.. basically two cut/boost knobs for bass and highs. This feature makes this thing thump *so* hard, and provides hours of narcissistic self-gratification. As in, playing back a pattern or two and using these to build, mangle, drop can make you lose track of time.

Many thanks people, the Volca Sample channels are excellent. Just one last question before i inevitably hit "Buuuuy Sucker". When changing pattern, does it wait until the outgoing pattern is finished before the new one start? If not, is the change quantised to say, 8th beats?

Muchos gracias...

It does not, which is a Volca feature in general, I think. There's no way around it, as far as I know.

However, it stays on beat, though, so it doesn't restart the new pattern, but continues where you are in the beat, which makes for some interesting options to switch back and forth between patterns and always stay in sync.

You'll learn to love it, it's part of the instrument's organic nature :)

Go on Apapdop! Click that "Buy it Now" button, you won't regret it!
I picked up a volca sample at the weekend and it plays SO Nicely with the grey 'tribe!
I'm using 2 channels on the tribe with audio in from the V.S. Different treatments on both channels, you can make some Wild Sounds!

On paper, the ES2 runs circles around the Volca Sample.

In real life, it does not. The Volca Sample has tons of character and immediacy in its workflow that will generate different results, no matter how you're wired.

It's a great companion to any of the two Electribes, and to any rig in general.

And like sauce said, the isolaters are outstanding, well worth the purchase alone.

Not really, you get + 6 db and! -Infinity on high and low freq so it's only a band pass if you turn both down.....
But it sounds Sweeter than it has ANY right to!

You won't regret the purchase. It's easier and more fun to create dynamic and interesting rhythm parts on the volca sample than on the electribe due to the immediacy of its workflow and the fact that you can jump between sequences seamlessly.

So you can then devote more E2S to harmonic or melodic samples. And even comfortably start to use multiple stereo samples, which I think bumps the sound quality game up quite a bit on the electribe.

At the moment I'm using this set up and it is golden:

Volca Sample for drums and percussion
E2S for ambient, melodic and vocal samples
Novation Circuit for basslines, chords and leads, and some extra percussion
