went to look at a krome today - Good sequencer, bad build

Post by amiga1200 »

hi, after seeing that the new yamaha montage is out of my price range, i decided to have a look at a krome in person. i've read this forum and know the stories about the build quality and keybed being poor.

let me tell anyone thinking of a krome - the stories are true, it really is flimsy and a poor keybed, my kross and yamaha moxf are both a lot better.

what a shame, the sequencer is really good, but could not spend 600 pounds on such a cheep plastic toy.

cheers Rick

Keybed - not good at all.

Build quality - fantastic. Mine has been used extensively in two bands for over two years now and has not even looked like letting me down. It's been in heat, cold, covered in dust during an outdoor gig, our bass player dropped his hard case on it, hasn't missed a beat. Light weight does NOT mean poorly built.

Kross - keybed is identical to the Krome.

I too have used my Krome extensively over the last two years, in no less than 3 bands, and it works beautifully!
I'm primarily a guitar player, so the keys don't bother me in the least, and the sounds are incredible, mostly because I can easily tweak, and customize, them.
Happy Krome owner here!

My Krome 61 has also been through a lot of gigs, always in a gig bag when transporting. Sure the key bed could be better. I am not a piano guy, I was introduced into the music industry with a Hammond B3 and Yamaha DX7 many moons ago in high school with a band. I prefer a synth action and for that, it is perfect. It has been dropped, crushed with pa equipment and endured lots of set ups and set downs. It has worked perfectly for many years now. You will find lots of keyboards with better keys but for me the fact that it is very light-weight and works 100% of the time, it was a good buy. Cheers !

I agree. The Krome keybed is junk. $150 cheap Casio or Yamaha toys have a better keybed. The back of the keys do not even go down, roll side to side and are extremely flimsy. The keybed does not function normal. What a shame a nice sounding semi Pro board scares off buyers because of the keybed. Shame shame on Korg. Next gen Korgs need grade A keybeds or this long time Korg fan boy is riding the next 20yrs on the Roland Yamaha tour.

And I disagree...the Krome keybed functions normally...the "back of the keys", "roll side to side" and "extremely flimsy" things may affect people who play really hard (like Jerry Lee Lewis) and don't take care of their instruments, but I've never noticed any of these things...the Krome is built at least as solidly as any other plastic-bodied synth, and while the keybed is not very good, it's certainly playable unless you're very particular about keyboard feel...and the Krome is light, relatively cheap, sounds great, etc., etc...as I and many other posters have said, try before you buy to see if the Krome will work for you...and NIO0850, enough on this, OK?

It does not function normal. You can not depress the base of the keys. They hinge outside not underneath like they should.. This is not normal. Every cheap Roland, Yamaha, Casio keybed is far superior with 1/2 the retail price. The back of the keys should not roll side to side and you should be able to push it down... Shame on Korg... :(

That's a bit much. I have the Krome 88, its a pretty good keyboard with a graded hammer keyboard. I am willing to agree with you if you are referring to the Krome 61 based purely on youtube reviews. That said, personally speaking, Krome has been somewhat of a disappointing buy. I am getting warmed up to the keyboard, but unlike my other keyboards and synths, it is definitely taking me a lot longer.
At this point, I am at a point where my mind is made up, and I don't wanted to be confused with the facts.
