Cable problem using Headphones output

Post by jamesfinn82 »

So I've tried using brand new Van Damme cable in the headphones output of Kronos. It's balanced jack to xlr going into Yamaha DXR10 XLR input. Sounds empty az if there's only one half of the signal sounding out. Using the cable in the L/Mono of Kronos sounds fine incidently... Any info appreciated

You're mixing balanced (mono) with stereo. The mixer is expecting a balanced mono signal. Your sending it a stereo signal. The mixer is attempting to balance this signal but being stereo, it can't.

When you come out of the L/mono your getting a balanced signal that is a mix of both channels.

Thanks for clearing that up. So i would need a Mono TS cable to get decent sound this way then? Does it matter if it's balanced or unbalanced? Will be for the purpose of playing live in my band. Been trying years to get best sound setup always learning... Current setup is Mono setup from Kronos to PA using Kronos L/Mono output. Monitoring setup includes using Headphones Output on Kronos into my Yamaha DXR10...

The DXR10 is a mono speaker, so its input needs to be mono. It does have stereo (i.e. L and R) inputs via the 1/4" jacks or RCA connectors, but these will be mixed by the speaker circuitry to give mono.

The Kronos, and most other keyboards, and many effects units, rely on stereo to give rich, full, and wide sounds. Hearing them in mono can be a bit of a disappointment. It's best to have stage PA systems that can handle stereo, though not all venues will offer FOH stereo ins.

Using the Kronos' L/mono output to the DXR10's L/mono jack input using a TS cable is one way to go. If you want to go the TRS route, then using the Kronos L/mono out jack and an XLR connector on the other end of the cable to the DXR10 XLR input would cater for this.

A cable with stereo jack for the headphone socket on the Kronos, split out to give two mono cables carrying L and R, and each cable feeding a separate DXR10 via the DXR10's L/mono inputs for both speakers, is the way to make best use of the stereo qualities of the Kronos. Alternatively, two TS cables, the first from the L/mono out on the Kronos to the L/mono in on one speaker, and the second from the R out on the Kronos to the L/mono in on the other speaker. Hope that makes sense.

Nice explanation and many thanks for detailed info... By the way the DXR10 sounds fantastic when setup correctly.

Hello jamesfinn82.
My understanding is that you only have one DXR10....is that correct ?

Although I'm not a fan of routing headphone outputs into anything other than...headphones....it can be done, with care.

Just a suggestion,if using the split cable method from the Kronos headphone socket,(as voip kindly explained), into one DXR10 unit, you could use the pair of input sockets 2(as per manual...?) instead.

I would prefer to use the aux outputs on the Kronos (1&2 or 3&4) into the L/R inputs 2 on the DXR10 ,but the choice is yours.

Hope this works out.

Best Wishes

Yes just a single DXR10 for this purpose. Funnily enough I've just read through Kronos manual and came across the individual outputs section. Didn't realise they were for this purpose so I'll give it a try tomoz. Thanks for the info!
